Come to the Table
"It isn't good for man to be alone..." (Gen. 2:18 NLB)
I’m at the University of Ottawa as I write, giving some campus ministry talks on the
“epidemic of loneliness.” The US Surgeon General and the WHO have described this as a widespread and rising public health crisis of social disconnection and in fact a threat to global health.
Now there are differences between being alone and being lonely, as you can
have sweet solitude and feel profoundly alienated in a crowd, or even in a marriage.
But if we are made in the image of a Trinitarian Godhead, we are made for connection. The irony is that we are supposedly in the most connected and “friended” age of all time, and yet we feel isolated and unwell like seldom before.
This Thanksgiving why not make space for a few extra folks. Or if you are alone
and want to share a family feast, drop a hint somewhere. We at GSC want to see
people connect, close to home and around the globe. Next to the cross, the most
obvious symbol of Christianity is the table - a table where all are welcome, to share
offerings for body and soul.
