Local Hero of the Month: Joe Casello

This month, we honor the late Rep. Joe Casello, a dedicated public servant whose life embodied compassion and service. Joe passed away at age 73 after suffering a heart attack, leaving behind a legacy of over 45 years in public service — 33 as a firefighter in Worcester, Massachusetts, and 13 as an elected official in South Florida.

Elected to the Florida House in 2018 after serving on the Boynton Beach City Commission, Joe was known as a quiet but powerful advocate for his constituents. One of his proudest accomplishments was championing the Purple Alert system, helping locate missing adults with cognitive or mental health conditions.

In his final message, Joe said, “Helping people in their times of need wasn’t just part of the job — it was a calling and a privilege.” For that, and so much more, we remember Rep. Casello as our Local Hero of the Month.

School Zone Safety Program Starts Fall 2025 in Boca Raton

Automated Cameras to Enforce Speed Limits in Boca Raton School Zones

Starting with the 2025–2026 school year, the City of Boca Raton will launch its School Zone Safety Program using Red Speed cameras to enforce speeding violations in school zones. This program is authorized under Florida House Bill 657, signed into law on May 31, 2023.

How It Works

  • Cameras Active: During arrival and dismissal times when school zone lights are flashing.
  • Violations: Issued to drivers going 10+ mph over the posted limit.
  • Fines: $100, no processing fees, no points, and no impact on insurance.

Traffic studies show hundreds of daily speeders in school zones. Similar programs have reduced speeding and improved safety in other communities.

PHASE 1 – Launching at Start of 2025–2026

Mizner Elementary

Boca Raton Community High

J.C. Mitchell Elementary

PHASE 2 – Coming Later in 2025–2026

Lake Elementary

Calusa Elementary

Spanish River Community High

Reminder: Citations will only be issued when lights are flashing. Drive safely and protect our students!

Florida’s New Super Speeder Law: Arrests Already Underway

As of July 1, 2025, Florida has enacted a tough new law targeting excessive speeding, and arrests are already being made across the state.

The new “Super Speeder” law creates a criminal offense for:

  • Driving 100 mph or more in a reckless manner, or
  • Exceeding the posted speed limit by 50 mph or more

Violators can now be arrested on the spot and face criminal charges under the offense of “dangerous excessive speeding.”

Key Penalties:

  • Mandatory court appearance (no more just paying a fine)
  • Higher fines, especially for going 30 or 50+ mph over the limit
  • License suspension for repeat offenders
  • Up to $1,000+ in fines for felony speeders
  • Points on your license, which can lead to suspension and increased insurance rates

Several arrests have already been made in Orlando, Brevard, and Orange counties — including one driver going 113 mph on her way to pick up a dog, and another caught at 106 mph in a 45 mph zone.

According to Florida Highway Safety officials, speeding contributed to over 38,000 crashes and 437 deaths in 2023 alone. Law enforcement hopes the new law will send a message: Slow down — lives depend on it.
