AAVLD and USAHA Legislative Leaders Meet In DC

During the third week of March, AAVLD and USAHA legislative committee leaders met in Washington, DC, for two days of meetings with key governmental agencies.  This included USDA, APHIS, VS, NVSL, NAHLN, FSIS, NIFA, ARS, APHIS, WS, DHS-CBP, FDA-CVM, FBI-WMD, WOAH, AVMA and CDC. Over four hours alone were dedicated to key USDA leaders, including the personal attendance of the US Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Rosemary Sifford, and USDA APHIS Administrator Dr. Michael Watson.  Their time and conversation were greatly appreciated.

Hot topics were of course related to the management of the current HPAI outbreak in the poultry and dairy industries, NAHLN funding via the Farm Bill which has expired but been extended with a no change continuing resolution through September 30th, and how to maintain essential animal health/food security services where there are possibilities of potential downsizing of budgets within key agencies. This includes concern regarding NAHLN (USDA) and VetLIRN (FDA) funding sources.  Though the Federal component of operating state veterinary diagnostic laboratories is quite small, the national coordination and networking, as well as sharing of resources during significant outbreaks, are vital and have proven to be an efficient and most effective state/federal partnership for the past 23 years.

AAVLD and USAHA are especially appreciative of the hospitality shown by two allied organizations that hosted one day each of our meetings at their DC headquarters; we could not do this efficiently without you… THANK YOU:

·      AVMA. Thank you, Dr. McClure, Dr. Hartley, and staff.

·      NCBA. Thank you, Dr. Kathy Simmons and staff.

Detection of bovine respiratory disease complex–related pathogens in nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue, Hegazy et al.

Abstract. Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a multi-etiologic disease that significantly impacts the cattle industry. Nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) is the nasal mucosal immune system that protects against various pathogens; however, reports on its pathology are limited. We compared the pathologic impact of BRDC-related viruses on the NALT and lungs of 10 pneumonic and 3 negative control Japanese black (JB) calves. Three bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) persistently infected Holstein calves were examined as positive control; all 3 calves had BVDV in situ hybridization (ISH)-positive signals in NALT follicular macrophages and lymphocytes, suggesting viral replication in these cells. NALT and lungs of pneumonic JB calves had weak-positive BVDV results in PCR and negative results in ISH, indicating late-stage transient BVDV infection. The finding of BVDV in unvaccinated pneumonic JB calves confirmed the involvement of a BVDV field strain. More
