Last month, experts released their forecast for the hurricane season that begins June first.

According to one news account, "The scene is being set for a turbulent year in the tropics, one that could approach a record-setting pace that may exhaust the entire list of names for tropical storms and hurricanes -- and then some."

This is the time to start thinking about preparations. While there is no immediate need to stock on supplies, there are things you should do now that may require a longer period of time to square away.

Below is a helpful list. In addition to those tips, I urge you to have a plan if your home will be vacant during the summer. If you are not here, someone should ensure your home is properly prepared if necessary.

I know it's early, but the earlier you prepare, the more protection you will have.

NEW FEATURE:

MEET OUR TEAM

New campaign highlights Village team

We are excited to launch a new campaign to introduce the men and women who work for our village.

"SERVICE PROVIDED - PAR EXCELLENCE" will highlight a different Village of Golf employee each month. We will include some personal details and, of course, information on their village responsibilities.

We think it is important that you get to know the people responsible for keeping our village beautiful and safe.

Our first feature will be in our June newsletter.

Hurricane season begins June 1

We know! It's only May and hurricane season does not begin until June.

Some preparation, (such as stocking up on supplies) can be done any time. But other check list items may require more time. That's why we're mentioning this now. Here are a few things to begin thinking about that may take time to address.

Check your insurance coverage: Take a look at your policy. If any changes need to be made or any information requires updating, it could take a few months for the changes to take effect.

Take a look at your roof: Ensuring your roof is in good shape is important. If any repairs are needed, supply or labor shortages may delay critical repairs. Even if there are no shortages, simple scheduling may push your repair into hurricane season.

Tree trimming: Making sure your landscaping is properly trimmed as we head into season is also important. Annual tree trimming often requires additional equipment to be scheduled and planned.

Recycling to remain near Village Hall

After considering alternatives, the decision has been made to keep the village recycling bins in the Village Hall parking lot.

Meanwhile, please remember some the basic recycling rules:

  • No plastic bags (they go in the trash).
  • No food boxes, such as pizza boxes or Chinese food containers.
  • Break down clean boxes before putting them in the bins.

Yellow and blue bins are available to assist transporting recycling to the recycling center. Let us know if you need them.

You're not fooling them

Just because you tightly tie the bag doesn't mean they don't know what is inside.

If you leave your trash out in plastic bags, you're inviting unwanted visitors to rip into the bags and spread trash all over the area.

Please make sure all your trash is left in cans that can be securely closed. Do not leave plastic bags on the street.

Be our eyes and ears during construction season

Construction season is in full swing and we need you to help us ensure all contractors are following village rules.

If you see any violations of our construction rules, please make sure you notify Village Hall. This includes work taking place outside of permitted hours, noise violations, crews violating our speed limits or other rules.

Village security does an excellent job keeping an eye on work crews, but they can't be everywhere all the time. That is why we ask for your help.

Don't let our new landscaping die! Please take care of our new plantings

With the undergrounding project completed there is now brand new landscaping around the large green transformer boxes.

Please remember it is your responsibility to water and maintain the new landscaping.

If you have a transformer box with new plants on your property, please make sure your landscaper knows to include them in regular maintenance. Since it is considered new landscaping, it falls under the watering rules for new landscaping. Specifically:

  • Regular watering days do not apply for up to 90 days after planting.
  • For the first 30 days after planting, you may water any day except Friday regardless of your address.
  • For days 31 through 90, you may water any day except Tuesday and Friday.

After 90 days, the watering returns to your normal schedule dictated by your house number.

Don't forget the watering rules

Please remember watering your landscaping is only allowed at certain times.

In general:

  • No irrigation allowed between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

  • Even numbered addresses may only run their irrigation systems on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Sundays.

  • Odd numbered addresses may only run their irrigation systems on Mondays, Wednesdays, and/or Saturdays.

  • You will notice there is no watering allowed on Fridays.

  • All new irrigation systems are required to have sensors that prevent watering when there is already sufficient moisture.

There are exceptions to the rules for newly-planted landscaping, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems, newly-applied fertilizer, and low-volume watering such as hand watering.
