A Message from the Nurses

We hope you enjoyed the break and spent some quality time with friends and family! Along with the fun of the holidays, school vacation and the winter season comes colds, flu, and various illnesses. You may be wondering when you can send your child to school after they have been sick. We hope you find the following information helpful.

If your child is sick with a cold, flu or virus, they can return to school when they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication, and when they feel better.

If your child is sick with strep throat or any illness requiring an antibiotic, they can return when they are fever free for 24 hours with the use of fever-reducing medication, when they have been on the antibiotics for 24 hours, and when they feel better.

If your child is sick with Covid-19 they will need to remain home for 5 days of isolation. They can return to school after they complete 5 full days of isolation from either symptom onset or positive test result with that day being day 0. Please contact your pediatrician to report the positive case.

In order to have any absences related to illness excused, please provide a doctor's note.

We wish you a happy and healthy new year!

Volunteer Opportunity

Sunrise of Burlington is an assisted living facility with two neighborhoods dedicated to traditional assisted living and one special care neighborhood for memory impaired seniors, Reminiscence. We are searching for students who are interested in working with the aging population and developing understanding of various age related needs that can be applied in several career paths. This partnership will open up an opportunity for both students and residents to benefit from each other’s life experiences. Students will be volunteering with the activity department facilitating programs such as: word games, trivia or other forms of creative engagement. We have several different time slots available and the hours are flexible. For more information, please contact Allyson Avery, Activity and Volunteer Coordinator by phone at (781) 229-8100 or email at burlingtonma.avc@sunriseseniorliving.com.

Lifeguarding Classes

The Lowell Recreation Office is recruiting youth to take the lifeguard classes in February and April (school vacation weeks). The class is free of charge for youth hired to work for the Recreation department and $150 for youth who work elsewhere. The flyers are attached for both school vacations and the classes will be held at the GLTHS pool in Tyngsboro. If anyone has any questions, please call the Recreation Office at 978-674-4175.

Team 4909 Billerica Bionics

Who is ready to get CHARGED UP? After having an incredibly successful 2022 season, and with 45 team members for the 2023 season, Team 4909 is eager to discover what this new year has in store for us! Here is a recap of our 2022 preseason:

CAD (Computer-Aided Design):

Over the preseason, our team has spent significant time training new members in CAD. CAD is a tool used to design parts before manufacturing. Members interested in learning CAD were shown the basics of modeling. Veteran members interested in advancing their CAD skills were given projects to work on with a partner. In the level 1 course, students made parts given a set of constraints without guidance. They learned how to navigate 3D space on a 2D screen in the design process. The students that completed this program have become proficient in CAD and will be able to contribute during the 2023 season. Each group in the level 2 course built a subsystem for past FRC games. The course's objective was to go through the design process from scratch rather than build the system.

Operations:

During the preseason, Team Ops’ focus was heavy on fundraising for the 2023 season. At the start of the school year, we sold custom laser-cut chromebook cases to BMHS students. Through the next two months, Team Ops ran a Calendar Raffle where students sold tickets outside of Market Basket and O’Connor Hardware. We pulled a winner every day of December for a chance to win different prizes each day. Congratulations to everyone who won, and thank you for your support. To conclude the offseason, Team Ops began working on this season’s submission for the Woodie Flowers Award, our business plan, and updating the team website and social media.

Manufacturing:

The manufacturing team concentrated on developing the skills that will be most required for build season. Members first learned how to read and interpret part sheets on basic machines. After, students moved on to other machines in the shop and hand tools. The group worked on our T-shirt shooter from a previous season and were challenged to use their knowledge learned from training. Currently equipped with a single barrel, the T-shirt shooter requires reloading after each shot. Students were tasked with devising a method of firing multiple T-shirts without needing to reload.

Software:

During the preseason, rookie members were introduced to coding in Java through Codecademy exercises. After building a foundation of basic coding knowledge, students progressed to controlling the robot directly. To get familiar with this environment, members programmed the robot to perform simple functions. They then set up a limelight camera to automatically target April Tags, the new addition for the game this year, as part of an introduction to vision processing. This involved learning how to use firmware and APIs to determine the distance to a target with just a camera. Members were then split into two groups. One group worked on electrical wiring, wire crimping, wire connectors and the typical structure of a robot’s electrical system. The other group worked on building a swerve drive drivetrain from scratch. This involved laying out and connecting the wiring for the robot and learning about CAN systems and how to work with them. Students of this group wrote robot code from scratch, jumped into configuring and structuring swerve drive code, and learned to apply math and real world physics into a robot program. By the end of the preseason, they produced a working swerve drive that our team plans to utilize during the early stages of build season.

Build Season Schedule:

- Monday: 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM

- Tuesday: 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM

- Wednesday: no meeting

- Thursday: 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM (Flex Meeting)

- Friday: 2:30 PM - 9:00 PM

- Saturday: 9:00 AM - 2:30 PM

- Sunday: no meeting

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for more updates, information on the team's accomplishments, and ways to support us!

Shawsheen Tech Applications

Are you applying to Shawsheen Tech for next year? As a part of their application process, ST requires a recommendation from either a teacher or your school counselor. You will want to select a staff member who knows you best. If you are applying to ST, please do the following:

(1) Decide who you will ask for a recommendation, and ask that individual in-person if they would provide you a recommendation.

(2) Once your counselor or teacher says that they will do a recommendation for you, email your school counselor with the name of the individual so that they can send a recommendation link to the person you've asked. Your recommender will then be able to complete the recommendation process.

1896 Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women. The Girton girls study ferociously and match their male peers grade for grade. Yet, when the men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a 'blue stocking' - an unnatural, educated woman. They are denied degrees and go home unqualified and unmarriageable. AP Exams

The Advanced Placement Exams are given annually in May. Click here for the College Board's 2023 AP Exam testing calendar.

If you have conflicting AP exams, please contact Mindy Cripps at mcripps@billericak12.com ASAP to discuss.

Location of exams is TBA (but will be in the BMHS building), and will be shared closer to the exam date.

Please note that AP exam testing is not optional at BMHS; if you are taking an AP course, you must take the AP exam, and the student/family is responsible for the exam fee(s).

The cost for this year's AP exams is: $97 per exam

*Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch according to federal income guidelines will have their exam subsidized by CollegeBoard and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and will pay $15 per exam.  If you qualify for free/reduced lunch, follow these steps: (1) register for the exam(s), (2) choose "no payment", and (3) contact Mindy Cripps at mcripps@billericak12.com and she will verify eligibility and adjust the fee for your individual exam(s). You will then be able to go back into Community Pass and pay the reduced fee.

The deadline to register and pay for your AP exams is November 10, 2022 at 11:59PM.  Payment MUST be received by November 10, 2022.  If you have a concern about meeting the deadline for the AP Exam fee, please contact Mindy Cripps.

**Students may only register for AP exams which are associated with the AP courses they are currently enrolled in. If you are not enrolled in an AP class, you may not take the exam.

If you have any questions about AP exams or payment, please contact: Mindy Cripps, Director of School Counseling and the AP Coordinator at: mcripps@billericak12.com

Schools Can Help Families Apply for Federal Help in Paying for Home Internet Access

Families who qualify for the free and reduced-price lunch program can get $50 off their monthly broadband bills, thanks to a new, emergency federal program, the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Communications Commission emphasized in a May 12 meeting.

Low-income families living on tribal lands are eligible for an even steeper discount, $75 a month.

What’s more, students in post-secondary education who receive Pell Grants can also tap the funding. And eligible families can receive $100 in one-time help in paying for digital devices—such as laptops, tablets, and desktop computers—as long as the family contributes between $10 and $50 for the hardware.

BMHS App

The BMHS App provides quick access to timely news and upcoming events. It also allows the user to determine how often and what type of notifications they receive. The first page provides 9 options (not all options are available to all users). The "News" option provides a weekly overview of coming events at BMHS. Currently, this would include all school events including clubs and the Fine Arts performances. We are working on an athletic integration as well. The "Events" option provides access to the BMHS Calendar, Fine Arts Calendar, and soon to be included Athletics Calendar. Each of these calendars is dynamic and encompasses the entire school year. The "My ID" and "Hall Pass" are only available to students and staff. The "Directory" provides access to all Staff emails and, if applicable, phone number. The "Quicklinks" option provides quick access to Aspen, Athletics, Community Pass, Guidance, Clubs, Nutrition, and the BMHS Library sign up form. "Documents" provides access to Bus Routes, Lunch Menus, COVID information, and other documents. The "Map" option provides driving directions to MVC schools and locations for school functions, e.g. Blue Ocean Event Center (location of Senior Prom). The "Language" icon allows the user to convert the app into one of 42 different languages. The phone icon on the bottom of the home page will call our Absentee Line (978-528-8710).
