Keeping your home in good order is something every homeowner should prioritize. Giving attention to even the smallest repair early on can prevent it from becoming a much larger — and more expensive — problem down the road. As Realtors, we frequently witness situations where a quick, affordable fix could have prevented major damage or costly repairs.

A simple but typical example is cracks in sidewalks or driveways. If you’re fortunate enough to live in one of our city’s most beautiful neighborhoods, shaded by grand oaks and blooming magnolias, you’ve likely seen areas where tree roots have lifted sections of walkway. These may seem minor at first, but they often turn into serious tripping hazards.

Just yesterday, I was reminded of how quickly this can escalate. A client had tripped over a slight rise in his back patio caused by underground roots, and unfortunately, he fractured his shoulder.

And let’s not forget the risks to children who are often running, riding bikes, or playing outside. Also to consider are the school children rushing to catch the bus or biking to and from school. We don’t want to see any skinned knees or twisted ankles from putting off those repairs we know need attention.

If you’ve noticed similar issues around your home, don’t wait. I had to remove a large oak tree from my front yard and its stump, then level the affected area. In my case, the sidewalk eventually settled on its own. In other cases, you may need to replace cracked or lifted concrete with new blocks. Either way, addressing the issue early can prevent both injury and liability — and offer peace of mind.

I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Please feel free to reach out through text, email, or leave a voicemail.
