WEARY WILLIE DAY

Weary Willie Day on December 9th recognizes the art of clowning and the impact it has on our lives. This holiday was named for the character made famous by Emmett Kelly, who was born on this day in 1898.

Weary Willie was a unique character in the art of clowning. Kelly had developed Weary Willy at a time when the white-faced, goofy clown was the norm, and selling the idea for a sad, down-on-his-luck clown did not fit the formula most circuses were seeking. For the time being, Kelly put back on the white face and the brightly colored costume.

Times and attitudes changed when the country was in the depths of the Great Depression. Downtrodden and world-weary was the face of the nation. People could identify with Weary Willie like never before. Weary Willie, his frowning, whisker-shadowed face, and his dirty, torn and worn costume, went on to become an American icon.

His son, Emmett Kelly, Jr. carried on Weary Willie's persona well into the modern era until his death in 2003, at the age of 83.

Bryan Bresee’s clutch block of a late game-tying field goal attempt sealed the win. Now, the focus shifts to Sunday’s matchup as the Saints take on Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders at the Caesars Superdome.

LSU Women's Basketball

BOSSIER CITY, La.– In Mikaylah Williams’ homecoming game Sunday in Bossier City, No. 5 LSU (11-0) defeated Grambling (2-7), 100-54, to remain unbeaten.

“I took (Mikaylah) out (late in the game) so the crowd could all acknowledge her,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “I just told her she needed to take a look around this arena. They’re here for her and what she means to this area and the state.”

In a pregame ceremony, officials from Parkway High School presented Williams with a framed jersey and announced the school will retire her No. 12 jersey. Williams spent significant time after the game taking pictures and signing autographs with her hometown fans.

“I recognized a lot of people,” Williams said. “My old elementary teacher was here and she came and spoke with a lot of old classmates and old teachers as well. I’m just glad that they came out and that I got to see a lot of familiar faces and see that those people are still supporting me and they still have my back.”

Williams finished the contest with 16 points on 5-10 shooting and added 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Flau’Jae Johnson recorded yet another 20 point game and tacked on 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Aneesah Morrow recorded her 83rd career double-double to move into a tie for the eighth most in DI history. Morrow ended the game with 26 points and 16 rebounds.

BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s basketball team ran off 10 straight points after Florida Gulf Coast University opened an early lead and never trailed again in scoring an 80-71 win over the Eagles Sunday afternoon at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Tigers, down 4-0, jumped to a 10-4 lead, and gradually built as much as a 16-point lead with 4:10 to go before intermission. The Tigers led at halftime at home for the first time since the season opener, 42-27.

In the second half, the Tigers continued to hold the advantage, getting up by as much as 22 with 6:15 to play before some turnovers and long baskets by FGCU allowed the Eagles to get to within single digits at game’s end.

All five starters were in double figures led by Daimion Collins, in his first LSU start, played 24 minutes, made 8-of-13 field goals with a three-pointer and a free throw to finish with 18 points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Jordan Sears and Cam Carter each had 13 points, Corey Chest had his first double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Dji Bailey had 11 points. Carter also had five assists.

Rahmir Barno had 15 points to lead the Eagles (3-7) with Rory Stewart scoring 12 and Keeshawn Kellman and Dllion John each adding 11. Kellman had a double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

LSU shot 50 percent for the game (29-of-58) with eight treys and 14-of-16 at the free throw line. FGCU shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) with 11 treys and 4-of-5 at the line.

LSU out rebounded FGCU, 36-30 with LSU getting a 21-10 advantage in points off turnovers and 40-26 in point in the paint.

The 8-1 Tigers now concentrate on final exams for the next few days before departing on Friday for Frisco, Texas where LSU will take part in the Compete 4 Cause Classic against SMU in the Comerica Center. LSU’s next home game is Dec. 17 against Stetson.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

The Jump Hounds

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in ‘jump’, the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

The Bluegrass Pickin' Party is an open acoustic bluegrass jam. Bring your guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, bass, dobro, harmonica, or singing voice to join the jam circle. Beginners welcome to come and learn traditional bluegrass music. Intermediate and advanced players welcome as well. This weekly jam is also open to anyone and everyone who'd like to come listen and enjoy the music.

What is the modern equivalent of the word “poltroon”?

Coward

Brave person

Ambitious person

Confident person

The modern equivalent of the word “poltroon” is “coward.” A coward is someone who is afraid to do what is right or to stand up for themselves in difficult or dangerous situations. A coward may be afraid to speak out against injustice, to stand up for the weak and vulnerable, or to face danger or criticism. They may also be afraid to express their true feelings or opinions. Cowards often lack the courage and strength of character to do what is right, even when it is unpopular or difficult. They may also be too afraid to take risks or to make changes that could potentially improve their lives and the lives of those around them.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,December 9

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL PASTRY DAY

National Pastry Day celebrates one of the world's most favored baked goods. On December 9th, visit your local bakery and pick up one or two of your favorite kinds.

The pastry is a name given to a large variety of baked goods which are made with ingredients such as flour, sugar, milk, butter, shortening, baking powder, and eggs. Pastry dough is rolled out thinly and then used as a base for different baked products. A few of the more common bakery items include pies, tarts, quiches, and pasties. Bakers create both savory and sweet dishes from the doughs they create. Additionally, they continue to develop new and delicious creations all the time!

  • Pastries can be traced as far back as the ancient Mediterranean where they had almost paper-thin, multilayered baklava and Phyllo dough.
  • Pastry-making began in Northern Europe after the Crusaders brought it back from the Mediterranean.
  • French and Italian Renaissance chefs eventually perfected the puff and choux pastries while 17th and 18th-century chefs brought new recipes to the table. Included in the innovative recipes were Napoleons, cream puffs, and eclairs.

Culinary historians often consider French pastry chef Antonin Careme (1784 – 1833) to have been the original great master of pastry making in modern times.

Many different types of pastry deliver baked goods that make our mouths water. Most of them fall into one of the following categories:

  • Shortcrust pastry – simplest and most common.
  • Sweetcrust pastry – similar to the shortcrust but sweeter.
  • Flaky pastry – simple pastry that expands when cooked.
  • Puff pastry – has many layers that cause it to puff when baked.
  • Choux pastry – very light pastry that is often filled with cream or other fillings.
  • Phyllo pastry – paper-thin pastry dough that is used in many layers.

HAVE THE CAKE AND NAME IT TOO

Why Angel Food Cake? We Explain The Name Of 10 Cakes

Published on December 9, 2024

Credit: Ravi Sharma

While a cake can be a common, modest sweet treat for everyday situations, this kind of preparation is usually made to mark special occasions or to enjoy as a delicacy in tea houses. And, as such, some of these confections can get quite fancy. Some of its notable exponents have ambitious names like Chiffon Cake or Angel Food Cake—names that attempt to express with words the flavor experience these treats provide. Follow us as we uncover the meaning behind some of these delicious names!

1Red Velvet Cake

Credit: amirali mirhashemian

Velvet is a lush, dense fabric, famous for its softness. Its name is usually associated with smooth surfaces and textures, and the world of food is no exception. The famous Red Velvet Cake got the "velvet" part of its name thanks to the softness of its texture, and the "red" part, thanks to the raw cocoa powder employed in its confection, which turned red in the presence of buttermilk.

During World War I, many bakers were forced to turn to grated beets or beet juice when eggs and milk were in short supply.

2Black Forest Cake

Credit: matheussgoncalves

Despite its dark brown chocolate color, the Black Forest Cake is not called that way because it resembles the dark wooden logs in the forest. Instead, its name comes from a sour cherry brandy called Schwarzwalder Kirschwasser (Black Forest Cherry Brandy) developed in the Black Forest region of Germany.

Black Forest cake is made by soaking the chocolate sponge in sugar syrup flavored with cherry brandy and topped with whipped cream. The German variation of Black Forest cake uses buttercream, while Austrians make theirs with whipped cream, gelatin, and cornstarch.

3Coffee Cake

Credit: Aveedibya Dey

The habit of pairing coffee with cake began in Europe around the 1600s, with the introduction of the beverage. Germans and Dutch favored sweet pastries and cakes as their accompaniment of choice.

The "coffee cake" was brought to the United States in the late 1800s and it was adapted into more of a pastry than bread. Then, in the 1950s, bakers began making coffee cakes in Bundt pans to better support a heavier batter and thick streusel topping. Modern coffee cake can be made with a variety of toppings, icing, fruits, and nuts.

4Angel Food Cake

Credit: Nathalie Jolie

The angelic nature of the Angel Food Cake resides in its light, airy texture, made possible by a ridiculous amount of eggs. It is categorized as a "foam cake" because it derives its structure from heavily beaten egg whites.

Angel Food Cake is highly versatile. Although vanilla is the most traditional flavor, bakers can substitute citrus or almond extracts, as well as add unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolate version. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves can also be used for a spiced undertone.

5Devil's Food Cake

Credit: Olga Petnyunene

On the other side of the spectrum, we find Devil’s Food Cake. This confection has a dense texture and derives its structure from vegetable oil. Unlike its angelic counterpart just mentioned, Devil's Food Cake uses leavening agents like baking soda and baking powder to rise.

There is evidence that shredded beets were added to the first Devil's Food Cake recipes to add moisture and sweetness, making it a precursor to the popular red velvet cake.

6Pound cake

Credit: sheri silver

A simple name for a simple cake, indeed. The Pound Cake’s origins stem from the 18th century British, illiterate home bakers who relied on simple memorized recipes to produce consistent bakes. A classic pound cake is made with a pound of each of the following ingredients: butter, sugar, eggs, and flour. While the recipe has been updated over time, its core ingredients remain the same.

7Opera cake

Credit: CreativeCoffeeConsulter

A cake as fancy as its name implies, the Opera Cake is a traditional French dessert with three layers: almond sponge, espresso buttercream, and chocolate ganache. This cake was named after French pastry chef Cyriaque Gavillion's wife, who remarked that his chocolate creation resembled the Paris Opera House.

The flour is traditionally made of a mix of almond flour and white pastry flour, and a layer of espresso-brandy syrup is soaked into the cake for flavor before the entire cake is covered in espresso buttercream and delicate chocolate ganache.

8Chiffon cake

Credit: freestocks

In a similar style to the previously mentioned Red Velvet Cake, Chiffon Cake was named after a fabric. Chiffon is known for its lightness and the Chiffon Cake aims to recreate this texture with vegetable oil and soda for texture and rise. These ingredients give chiffon cake a comparatively heftier texture than a sponge cake.

Chiffon cake is most commonly associated with citrus flavors. Orange, almond, chocolate, and coconut are four of the most popular chiffon cake flavors; the citrus notes are accented by a light, fluffy batter.

9Johnnycakes

Credit: Luke Pennystan

Quite similar to pancakes or hoecakes but not exactly the same, Johnnycakes are made with yellow or white cornmeal mixed with hot water and milk. They may be served slightly sweet or savory.

The origin of Johnnycakes is not entirely clear, but they likely have Native American roots, originating from what Pawtuxet Indians referred to as "Shawnee cakes." Johnnycakes can also be served with syrup and butter (a la pancakes) or fresh fruit.

10Poke cake

Credit: yadetzy0

A more straightforward name than most of the ones found on this list (with the possible exception of the Pound Cake), Poke Cake is made by poking small holes in the top of a baked cake and adding a layer of flavored gelatin or pudding.

To make this cake, prepare the mix as directed on the box and bake. Then poke ½-inch holes into the cake and pour the prepared Jell-O mixture over. Once the cake has set, it is topped with whipped cream and served.

Mardi Gras on Canal Street New Orleans in 1924

🎄🎄

We like to look back with memories of holiday shopping on Canal Street. The air was cold (well, New Orleans cold), people were bundled up but still dressed nicely, and there was always someone ringing a bell outside of our favorite stores. Memories like these are what made us want to start this coalition. We can't wait to see Canal like that again.

Smile for the Birdie

The Aviary at the Audubon Zoo shown in 1936. The gentleman in the center is photographing is wife on the far right, but there was also a commercial photographer who would take souvenir pictures of children on a large stuffed bear. When Hurricane Betsy blew the aviary apart in 1965, all the birds escaped. The Monk Parrots went to live at the lakefront and their descendants can still be heard screeching in the treetops.

Living in Louisiana

Maison Blanche—which means “White House” in French—was a historic department store in New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded in 1897 by Isidore Newman, an immigrant from Germany, it became well-known for introducing the locally popular Mr. Bingle Christmas mascot. The flagship store, located on Canal Street, was a landmark. The original building had five stories divided into various departments, including clothing, jewelry, and more. Purpose-Built Department Store: The original Maison Blanche building was one of the first purpose-built department stores in New Orleans, with departments ranging from leather goods to toys.

The Marigny Opera Ballet presents a premiere of original song & dance for two wintry weekends – an uplifting & joyful journey through art!

HERE presents movement and musical collaboration exploring our journey through time—honoring the past, embracing the present, and looking toward a hopeful future. With uplifting choreography by Christian Denice and Diogo De Lima, as well as live music by Ted Joyner, these performances aim to inspire with a sense of hope and positive momentum.

HERE is an immersive exploration of time and place, centered around the history and present-day significance of the Marigny Opera House, originally built in 1847 as Holy Trinity Catholic Church by New Orleans’ German immigrant community. With choreography by internationally acclaimed choreographer Christian Denice and Artistic Director Diogo de Lima, this program of two contemporary ballets reflects on the passage of time, the power of presence, and the historical narratives embedded in the Marigny Opera House, and the Marigny Opera Ballet achieves yet a higher level of artistic and technical achievement.

This program fuses classical and contemporary elements to bring the past into conversation with the present. Music for HERE is composed by Ted Joyner (of Generationals) and performed live by The Delachaise Ensemble (featuring string quartet, bassoon, and piano). Jeff Pagano collaborates on orchestration and arrangement, while Brian Danos – composer, producer, and electronic experimentalist – will assist with both arrangement and performance, utilizing sequencers, samplers, and analog synthesizers to enhance the score.

Soon, we present programming that celebrates connection and life’s beautiful moments.

Location

The Garden District Book Shop

2727 Prytania Street New Orleans, LA 70130

Gypsy-Rose Blanchard will be at the Garden District Book Shop December 13 for an author meet & greet for her memoir My Time to Stand.

A victim of her mother’s Munchausen by proxy and child abuse survivor, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s unique and controversial case made headlines across the world. Now, she’s finally free to start living her life on her terms—and to tell her own story as only she can.

Forced to use a wheelchair in public and endure a lifetime of faux illness, fraud, and exploitation, Gypsy was subjected not only to her mother’s medical, physical, and emotional abuse, but deprived of childhood milestones. Prevented from attending school or socializing, Gypsy’s formative years were defined by pain and isolation.

After serving 8 years in prison for the role she played in her mother Dee Dee’s murder, Gypsy is embracing her fresh start—and reminding all of us that it’s never too late. Featuring Blanchard family photos and new facts about Gypsy’s life that she previously kept private, My Time to Stand offers an unprecedented look at the real Gypsy proudly embarking on her ongoing journey to recovery and self-discovery.

The evening will begin at 5:00 PM. Early Bird tickets are now on sale for $35 and include a signed copy of My Time to Stand and a photo opp with Gypsy. Guests are encouraged to knock out some holiday shopping while they wait around The Rink.

Central Grocery, famous for muffulettas, to reopen in French Quarter. See the plan.

Closed since massive hurricane damage in 2021, a rebuilt legend returns.

A half muffuletta from Central Grocery, the famous Italian market in the French Quarter.

Staff photo by Ian McNulty

More than three years after massive hurricane damage closed its doors, Central Grocery, the historic market and deli famous for its muffuletta sandwich, is finally set to return.

Central Grocery now plans to reopen on Saturday, Dec. 14, with regular hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, confirms Tommy Tusa, one of the shop's third-generation family owners.

The return of the market at 923 Decatur St. will restore a New Orleans icon that’s beloved by locals — and a bucket list stop for tourists.

The Central Grocery muffuletta will be available, and the shop’s retail shelves and deli cases will again be filled with Italian food products and other specialty items.

History and comeback

Central Grocery dates to 1906 and an era when the French Quarter was home to so many Italian immigrants that it was sometimes known as Little Palermo. The neighborhood was dotted with Italian groceries serving the microcosms of local life that developed here. Most are gone, but Central Grocery endured, in large part because of its muffuletta.

That long history was thrown into doubt by disaster.

During Hurricane Ida in 2021, a large portion of the three-story townhouse that rose above Central Grocery’s own two-story building collapsed, dumping tons of masonry down through the market’s roof. The building remained open to the elements for weeks, including through a tropical depression that lashed the area that same year.

The work to bring back Central Grocery was no mere round of repairs, but rather a complete rebuild of the Decatur Street property. At one point, the space was reduced to a floor and the three brick walls around it.

The Tusa family was determined to rebuild. Facing what was essentially a blank slate, they had a decision about how to bring it back — either replicating what was there or making a more modern deli. They chose to go back to their roots, and bring back the store along the lines that people remember.

“I wanted it to be like it was before. I feel I owe that to my family. We owe it to the people and to the city,” Tusa said.

A muffuletta network

The muffuletta is like an antipasto platter crossed with a sandwich, and Central Grocery has become synonymous with it. The house version is striated with layers of mortadella, salami and ham, Swiss and provolone cheese, and then topped with olive salad, a briny mix of marinated olives and vegetables squeaking with oil, all on a distinctive round seeded loaf.

All the time the French Quarter shop was closed, Central Grocery muffulettas have remained available thanks to moves the company took during the pandemic to stay afloat.

Working from a commercial-grade commissary kitchen in Kenner, Central Grocery has been shipping its signature sandwich nationally through the service Goldbelly, and distributing them through other New Orleans-area stores.

That network of retail locations has grown, and will continue as the French Quarter market returns. Tusa said working with these other businesses has been instrumental in keeping staff employed during the long rebuilding process.

New Orleans Bowl matchup is set. See which teams will play in Dec. 19 game.

Georgia Southern and Sam Houston State will meet in the 24th New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 19 in the Caesars Superdome.

Kickoff for the first meeting between the two schools is 6 p.m. The game will air on ESPN2.

“This matchup is an incredible opportunity to showcase the hospitality of New Orleans,” bowl executive director Billy Ferrante said.

Georgia Southern (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) finished second to Marshall in the league’s Eastern Division despite a 24-23 victory against the Thundering Herd. Late-season losses to Old Dominion and Troy denied the Eagles the championship game berth.

Sam Houston (9-3, 6-2 Conference USA) would have played Jacksonville State for the league title if Western Kentucky did not defeat the Gamecocks, 19-17, on a last-second field goal last week.

Still it’s been a significant year for the Bearcats, who are playing in their first bowl game in the program’s second season at the FBS level.

However, Sam Houston will be without longtime coach K.C. Keeler was named the coach at Temple earlier this week after 11 seasons at the Huntsville, Texas, school.

Offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen and assistant head coach John Johnson are in charge of the team for the bowl game according to athletic director Bobby Williams, who added that both are under consideration to succeed Keeler.

“Coaching changes are never easy,” Williams said. “But they also give you a chance to evaluate your program and we have a very strong candidate pool thanks to the job K.C. did.

“At the same time, it’s very important to us to make this the best bowl experience possible for the players who have put in so much strong work to get us into this position.”

Georgia Southern is in its seventh bowl in 10 years at the FBS level and the third straight under former Southern Cal coach Clay Helton. The Eagles improved from 6-7 the last two years.

It’s the second New Orleans Bowl appearance for Georgia Southern. The first came in the COVID-affected 2020 season, which saw 11 bowls cancelled when the Eagles played Louisiana Tech in a virtually empty Superdome due to game restrictions that also limited the teams not coming to New Orleans until the day before the game and leaving immediately thereafter.

“Billy and his staff did their best under the circumstances,” said Georgia Southern athletic director Jared Benko, who was then deputy athletic director. “The best thing was the outcome (Georgia Southern won, 35-3).

“Now we’re getting to return to Eagle Nation behind us. Our fans love going to bowl games and are especially looking forward to coming to a great city like New Orleans.”

Likewise, Williams said, Sam Houston fans will be enthused about coming to New Orleans.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

Courtesy of Jefferson Parish

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
