August Birthstone - The Sunny Peridot
Alleviates jealousy * resentment, spite, bitterness, irritation, hatred and greed
- Reduces stress, anger and guilt
Peridot is named from the ancient French word peritot, referring to its distinct color. Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August. It is also the stone given to celebrate the 16th year of marriage. Peridot has a very long written history. Ancient papyri record the mining of these stones as early as 1,500 BCE.
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur in only one color: an olive-green. The intensity and tint of the green depends on the percentage of iron in the crystal structure, so the color of individual peridot gems can vary from yellow, to olive, to brownish-green. In rare cases, peridot may even have a medium-dark toned, pure green.
Peridot History
Ancient Egyptians called peridot the "gem of the sun," believing it protected its wearer from terrors of the night. Most scholars believe the name peridot is derived from the Arabic word 'faridat' which means gem. In Hawaii, the stone is involved in ancient folklore and is said to symbolize the tears of the Goddess Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and fire.
