TNEC-CSEA receives new
5-year funding award from NIEHS-WTP

In July 2020, The New England Consortium – Civil Service Employees Association was informed that it was receiving a new 5-year funding award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences – Worker Training Program (NIEHS-WTP). TNEC-CSEA’s consortium partners include UMass Lowell, Civil Service Employees Association of New York (Local 1000 of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees), Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, Connecticut Council for Occupational Safety and Health, New Hampshire Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, and Rhode Island Committee on Occupational Safety and Health. The cooperative agreement training grant is in the amount $6.625 million for the period of 2020-2025 for the Consortium’s hazardous waste and emergency response worker health and safety trainings. The Consortium also received a $200,000 supplemental grant for COVID-19/infectious disease training for the new program year.  In addition, April 2020 TNEC-CSEA also received a $132,000 supplemental award to develop online COVID-19 preparedness trainings for essential workers.
NIEHS-WTP has supported TNEC-CSEA since 1987 and since then the Consortium has trained 59,852 workers in 3,996 courses, for a total of 620,822 contact hours of training. Many thanks to our consortium partners, trainers, advisory board, allies and friends in helping us to obtain continued funding from NIEHS-WTP!
October 16th
ConnectiCOSH Conference
On October 16th, our partners at ConnectiCOSH will be hosting their annual health and safety convention. This year due to the pandemic, it will be virtual. The convention's theme is "The Intersection of Community and Worker Safety and Health".
They have an exciting keynote speaker, Lois Gibbs. Lois, who is also known as “The Mother of Superfund”, directly influenced the development of important pieces of legislation including the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980, and the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986.
If you would like more information or to register for this event, please email Pamela Puchalski at Pamela.ctcosh@snet.net.

Our Partner, MassCOSH
Our partner, MassCOSH just published Dying for Work: Documenting the Pandemic’s Deadly Toll on Massachusetts Workers. The report follows the unfortunate impact COVID-19 has had on Massachusetts workers from across industries but especially drawing focus to a worker health and safety crisis that Massachusetts as well as other states have never seen before.  MassCOSH hopes the report is helping to demand stronger COVID-19 Workplace Safety regulations here in Massachusetts.  You can read an article about the report in the Boston Globe, where you may access the full report.

Heading Back to the Classroom...Online, Hybrid, and Traditional Classroom
For the past 6 months, TNEC has been delivering virtual courses on COVID-19 awareness. Demand for our other classes halted as people wanted to get a better understanding of what they were dealing with during the pandemic. During the last month, businesses have started to normalize and with that, demand has increased for our regular contract courses. TNEC is already delivering 8 Hour Refresher and 40 Hazardous Waste Site Worker courses. The 8 Hour Refresher has been modified to be delivered online, hybrid or traditional classroom. Before TNEC agreed to provide these courses onsite at local businesses, we developed a comprehensive safety plan. Each delivery also includes a review from a safety officer to ensure our staff and participants are safe at all times. For a listing of our courses, please go to: https://tnectraining.com/the-new-england-consortium/courses-price-list/
