Damaged Vessel to Be Removed from Bremerton Marina

On September 18, a transient vessel at Bremerton Marina began taking on water and subsequently caught fire. Kitsap Transit’s emergency response crew extinguished the fire, and Port of Bremerton staff deployed pumps to dewater and stabilize the vessel.

Following the incident, the Washington State Department of Ecology was asked to respond to the marina, where they removed fuel and other potential contaminants from the vessel, and installed airbags to provide additional flotation and help keep the vessel afloat while arrangements were made for its removal.

The damaged vessel is scheduled to be removed from the water on October 1. Beginning at approximately 9 a.m., the vessel will be towed from Bremerton Marina to the Port Orchard Marina boat ramp, where it will be hauled from the water and placed on blocks.

The vessel will remain on Port property for a minimum of 45 days while the Port completes the required notice and possession process for the derelict vessel before proceeding with demolition and disposal.

Removing the vessel from the water will eliminate the immediate risk of sinking and further reduce the potential for environmental impacts to local waterways.

The Port will continue coordinating with partner agencies as it works toward the safe and final disposal of the vessel. The Port of Bremerton appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation while this work is completed.

Questions regarding the vessel removal or temporary impacts at the Port Orchard Marina boat ramp may be directed to Port of Bremerton Director of Marinas, Tim Petrick.
