Older Kindles + Libby eBooks
Amazon has announced that it will end support for older Kindle models on May 20, 2026. This means that users with older Kindles will be unable to download new books from the Kindle store, including eBooks borrowed from the library through Libby. This change affects any Kindle devices released in the year 2012 or earlier. Impacted models includes the original Kindle (1st and 2nd generation), Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4 and 5, Kindle Touch, and the first-generation Kindle Paperwhite.
After the May 20 update, users should still be able to read books they’ve already downloaded. However, if the device is factory reset or deregistered, it will become essentially unusable.
This move by Amazon is clearly designed to push customers to purchase a new device. The situation is entirely out of the County's control, however there are viable alternatives to the Kindle, such as the Kobo e-reader (which also has color models).
