Every new baby brings a world of possibilities. And for the midwives who help welcome these little ones into the world, each birth is an opportunity to support a family at the beginning of its journey.
But sometimes, that journey takes an unexpected turn. A baby may be born with a rare genetic condition that isn't immediately apparent, leaving families searching for answers. That's where early screening, specialized care and connections among healthcare professionals can make all the difference.
Recognizing the important role midwives play, DDC Clinic welcomed a dozen midwives, nurses and other healthcare professionals in October for its first annual Midwife Day. The event brought together those caring for families in the Plain community to share knowledge and explore the resources available at DDC Clinic.
For some attendees, it was their first visit. Others discovered services they hadn't known were available so close to home.
DDC Clinic's team shared information about inherited genetic conditions, early diagnosis and the Clinic's Genetic Awareness Panel (GAP) newborn screening program. Participants toured the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory and Family Heart Center and received infant CPR education.
But perhaps the most valuable part of the day wasn't found in a presentation or laboratory tour. It was in the conversations, questions and new relationships formed between professionals committed to helping children and families thrive.
Because when the people caring for our youngest patients know where to turn, families have a better chance of finding answers sooner.
DDC Clinic hopes to make Midwife Day a tradition, strengthening connections and expanding the network of care available to families.
