Alan Broadbent Trio
Sunday, August 25, 4:00-6:00 pm
$40/$35 Members
He won his first Grammy for an orchestral arrangement of “When I Fall In Love” for Natalie Cole’s second video with her dad. He took home his second for an orchestral accompaniment written for the incomparable jazz pianist and singer Shirley Horn. And let’s not forget the two Grammy nods
as a soloist and with his jazz trio for best instrumental performances with music giants Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, and Keith Jarrett.
Since he began his career as a pianist and arranger for Woody Herman’s band, Australian-born Alan Broadbent’s career has been on fire. Nelson Riddle, David Rose and Johnny Mandel invited him into the studio scene.
Diana Krall asked him to conduct her “Live in Paris” DVD. And, Glenn Frey had him arrange all the strings for his “After Hours” CD. And, since we’re into a bit of name-dropping, when you listen to Sir Paul McCartney’s “Kisses on the Bottom” with the London Symphony, six sensational string arrangements are courtesy of Alan, too. Yep, Alan’s collaborated with too many stars on too many albums to mention, including his own.
Check out his latest, “New York Note,” released earlier this year. Hear him perform LIVE at Highfield soon!
Listed to this music clip of the Trio’s latest CD, “New York Note.”

"The Works of Kurt Weill"
Saturday, August 17, 5:30-7:00 pm
$30/$20 Members
Highfield and the College Light Opera Company, partners and neighbors, are pleased to present this unforgettable talk.
Kurt Weill is considered one of the most versatile and influential composers of the 20th century. Working with a stable of brilliant librettists and lyricists, Kurt genre-hopped among plays, operas, operettas, and Broadway musicals. His musicals tackled important, socially relevant, and complex subjects. He is best-known for his collaborations with Berthold Brecht, including
The Threepenny Opera (1928)
. With libretto by Maxwell Anderson,
Knickerbocker Holiday
(1938) featured “September Song”. In this stimulating talk, David M
öschler surveys Weill’s work and describes the effect his immigration to the United States had on his work.
David M
ö
schler is equally at home in a pit orchestra, rock or jazz band, on the concert stage, in a recording studio, or in academia. He founded the Awes
öme Orchestra Collective that holds free, low-pressure, high-level orchestra reading sessions of new and traditional repertoire in non-traditional and accessible locations. He is an award-winning San Francisco Bay Area-based musical director and conductor and has been with CLOC for six summers.

Saturday, August 24, 4:30-7:00 pm
Under the Tent
$30/$20 Members
Join your fellow sailors on the “dogwatch” — a time to relax on deck, to yarn, joke, create fancy knot work, carve scrimshaw, play instruments, dance, and sing.
The Rum Soaked Crooks
— Tom Goux, Jacek Sulanowski, Dan Lanier, and Iain Geddes — will hold a musical dogwatch featuring a varied program of traditional, contemporary, and original maritime material. Your musical voyage will include salty songs, diaphanous ditties, and roiling recitations, collected from many ports of call. “The Crooks” are known for their robust harmonies and lively instrumentals — concertina, guitar, ukulele, accordion, fiddle, whistle, and percussion. Entertainers, researchers, and historical interpreters, the “Crooks” have been delighting audiences in New England and beyond for more than three decades.
