Single-Use Plastics Requirements for Food Service Businesses

The City is proposing an update to its Single Use Plastic Ban Ordinance at the September 30th City Council meeting. In 2019, Council approved a Single-Use Plastics Ban, which requires all food service ware to be recyclable plastic or compostable; all single-use straws, utensils, napkins, and like materials to be only distributed upon request and compostable; and allows customers to bring their own reusable drink containers to restaurants and food vendor locations. The new update being considered would require all food service ware to be compostable or reusable (plastic recyclable materials will no longer be compliant). If Council approves the new ordinance, it would go into effect on November 14, with a six-month grace period for restaurants and food vendors to use their current stock and replace non-compliant options.
