January 22, 2025

Hi Team,

As we brave the frigid temperatures together, we at BEAT are looking ahead to the warmer months, and are happy to announce that applications are now being accepted for our summer intern positions! Interns will support the many programs of BEAT through our three pillars of work: Education and Outreach, Stewardship, and Watchdogging. Read the full job description and learn how to apply here.

If you missed this month's Green Drinks with Nate Buckhout, you can watch the recording of his presentation "Black Bears in Massachusetts and Preventing Conflict" below, or on our Youtube channel.

Start looking forward to next month's Green Drinks: "From Pretzel Slime to Carnival Candy: An Introduction to Slime Molds" with Shelby Perry. This talk will be on Wednesday, February 12th and will be online over Zoom. You can learn more and find the registration link here.

Finally, we want to share this opportunity for public input on PFAS from sludge applications:

Last week, the EPA released a statement linking sewage sludge used as fertilizer to PFAS forever chemicals. Sludge is applied to fields in Massachusetts and throughout the country, posing serious risks to environmental and human health.

On January 31st, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection will hold a listening session on a report commissioned by the department about PFAS in sludge. Please join BEAT in opposing the practice of distributing and applying sewage sludge as fertilizer during the open discussion portion of the meeting.

For more information, including the two reports commissioned by MassDEP, and to register for the January 31st Zoom call (9:30-11:30 am), please visit the department's Residuals and Biosolids page.

That's it for now. Thank you for all you do to protect the environment!

GE representatives outline Housatonic Rest of River remediation plan for Woods/Valley Mill Pond, but many details must await final proposal

Leslee Bassman | The Berkshire Edge

"Housatonic Rest of River — Although a General Electric Company (GE) representative outlined its plan for Reach 6 of the Housatonic Rest of River remediation that includes Woods and Valley Mill ponds, some details of that facet of the decade-plus project will need to wait until the reach’s final plan is released next year. 'This is a conceptual design, so this is kind of a proof of concept, looking at what could be done, and we’ll get into more detail as we get to the final design,' GE Senior Project Manager Kevin Mooney said at a January 15 public meeting on Reach 6 held via Zoom. Public input on the Reach 6 plan ends February 3 and can be submitted to R1Housatonic@epa.gov. Following decades of contaminating the Housatonic River from its Pittsfield plant with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), or toxic chemicals that don’t break down, GE executed a 2020 agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and representatives from five affected Berkshire County towns outlining the remediation of the waterway...'" Downtown Pittsfield Cigarette Butt Containers Help Beautify Corridor

Brittany Polito | iBerkshires

"PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Cigarette waste recycling boxes have contributed to the beautification of North Street. In the fall, TerraCycle containers were installed between the intersection of Maplewood Avenue and the Berkshire Family YMCA. This was done by Downtown Pittsfield Inc. with funding from Downtown Blooms and support from Pittsfield Beautiful and Mill Town Foundation. It is working, as the corridor has fewer cigarette butts on the sidewalks and in its landscaping. Managing Director Rebecca Brien explained that the pilot program was brought forward by Pittsfield Beautiful, whose volunteers realized there was a need when finding cigarette butts in planter boxes..." Bohemian Waxwings: Intrepid Winter Wanderers

Meghan McCarthy McPhaul | The Outside Story

"Walking along a dirt road last winter, I heard a collection of pleasant, sputtering trills coming from a stand of conifers and hardwoods nearby. I’m used to the winter conversation of chickadees around feeder and woods, the cawing of crows and blue jays in the yard, and the high-pitched calls of golden-crowned kinglets sounding from the trees in winter – but I didn’t recognize this sound...." Millions Left in Air Pollution ‘Blind Spots’ Despite Stricter EPA Standards

Rambo Talabong | Inside Climate News

"MANHEIM, Pa.—Stephen Haldeman has four apps on his phone just to check air quality, and they have become part of his morning routine: a shot of hot coffee in his favorite white mug, his seat by the sunlit kitchen window and some quick research on his phone that will decide if he can go out that day. 'I wish I wouldn’t have to do it. But for me, unfortunately, when the air is bad, my throat goes tight. My eyes water. Suzy gets headaches,' Haldeman said, referring to his wife, Suzy Hamme. Retired and in their 70s, Haldeman and Hamme can’t afford to take chances. They’re both sensitive to pollution and doctors recently found a lump in Haldeman’s right lung that restricts his breathing..." READ MORE

Call for Wild Animal Stories

Nancy Elle Smith

"My book about wild animals will soon be finished. Much of it centers on animals in the southern Berkshires, but I want to collect stories from the woods and meadows and even in our backyards from all over the county. Some essays are still open for more stories.

Seen a Moose? Bob cats? Beavers? Any recent sightings of phantom Mountain Lions? Ruffed Grouse or American Woodcock? Wood Thrush? Weasels or fishers? Gray foxes?

Please send me a brief description of your sighting and a way I can contact you. NancyBerkshires@icloud.com. Writing this book has been an affair of the heart, helping erase the otherness between me and the wild others. I hope reading it might do the same. Thank you for all stories!"

State Officials Suspect HPAI Outbreak Impacting Geese and Other Wildlife

Press Release

"PLYMOUTH — State environmental and health officials are informing the public that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which very rarely infects humans, is suspected to be the cause of over 60 deceased Canada geese, swans, and other birds in Plymouth. The Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife), the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) are advising the public to refrain from handling birds or other animals that are dead or appear sick. Reporting wild birds: The public should report observations of sick or deceased birds if 5 or more birds are found at a single location using this simple form at mass.gov/reportbirds. Reporting domestic birds: The public should report sick or dead poultry or other domestic birds by calling MDAR’s Division of Animal Health at (617) 626-1795. Handling birds and other wildlife: The public should strictly avoid handling any sick or dead birds or other animals. Report sightings as indicated above or call the local Animal Control Officer. Keeping pets safe: Pets should always be kept away from wildlife. Cats are highly susceptible to HPAI and may die from an infection. Cat owners in affected areas should keep their pets indoors to prevent them from being exposed to infected wildlife. Hunting geese: While eating wild game meat is generally considered safe, licensed hunters can minimize risk from wildlife diseases by following best practices when handling and processing game... People with questions about the public health impact of HPAI can visit DPH’s Avian influenza webpage or call the Division of Epidemiology (available 24/7) at 617-983-6800. For more information about HPAI, please visit MDAR’s Avian Influenza webpage" READ MORE

Rail trail extension into Pittsfield part of much larger plan for 25 miles of bike and multi-use paths

Sten Spinella | The Berkshire Eagle

"An ongoing state and local effort to elongate the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail was successful in 2024, but still has a long way to go. The work on the rail trail was part of 15 miles of new shared-use paths introduced last year, backed by the state Department of Transportation. Now half a mile deeper into Pittsfield, the trail runs from Merrill Road in Pittsfield to Lime Street in Adams. There's a new access point on Merrill Road, completed in November, with a parking lot and a pedestrian signal..." READ MORE
