Through considerable drama, markets are up (again)

If you like drama with a happy ending, the first month of 2026 was for you! It was a rollercoaster start for U.S. equities, featuring a January 20th sell-off triggered by Japanese bond volatility and tariff tensions that gave the S&P 500 its worst single-day drop since October.

Still, despite that turbulence and a late-month pullback fueled by Big Tech earnings and Fed chair jitters, the S&P 500 marched to all-time highs and finished the month up 1%.

We will explain these apparent contradictions—and why the VIX spiked above 20 before the recovery—in the next edition of the GRAnderson Wealth Monthly Economic Update, due to be posted by the end of this week.

Greetings!

The Great Rotation: Beyond the "Mag 7"

For months, the "Magnificent Seven" tech giants have carried the market load, but January signaled a major shift. The rally finally broadened, with Mid-Caps and Small-Caps significantly outperforming the heavyweights, advancing 4% and 6% respectively.

We also saw a powerful rotation into Energy (up 14%) and Materials (up 9%). In a reversal of recent trends, Value outperformed Growth, and Dividend strategies led the way. Check the details in the upcoming Monthly Economic Update to see how these "factors" are influencing your portfolio's trajectory.

Stablecoins: No Longer the "Wild West"

So much of our attention lately has been on traditional stocks, but it’s time to look at the "new plumbing" of the financial world. The GENIUS Act of 2025 has officially moved stablecoins out of the realm of speculation and into a regulated payment framework.

For business owners, this isn't just "crypto talk"—it’s a tactical speed advantage. We’re talking about instant settlements and bank-grade security that could change your 2026 cash flow. Get more information on this landmark legislation in the next issue of the Monthly Economic Update.

What we're watching at GRAnderson Wealth

Energy & Safe Havens

Experience tells us that every great revolution needs a fuel source. For the AI revolution, that fuel is electricity. Commodities ended January on a high note, with S&P GSCI Energy surging 17%.

We are also watching the "safe haven" demand. A weaker dollar pushed Gold and Silver to multiple new highs in January before a sharp slide on the very last day of the month. We are particularly eager to see if this volatility continues as the new Federal Reserve leadership takes shape.

Community Spotlight: The Diamond Jubilee

We believe in celebrating milestones that honor tradition and excellence. The Owl Club of Denver is currently preparing for the 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee Debutante Presentation and Ball, which will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026. This historic event at the Renaissance Denver Hotel will even be memorialized by Rocky Mountain PBS. As these young ladies will be selected this month, we are now looking forward to the workshops and orientation for this year’s distinguished class of young ladies.
