Hey FAEA Family,
It’s here! The month we’ve been waiting for — when we get to be together again at our Annual Conference, October 16–19 at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront.
I am so proud — like bursting-proud — of the number of people stepping forward to do the good work this year. Some of you are running for positions. Some of you are teaching professional learning sessions. Some of you are joining committees or being the loud-and-proud cheerleaders who keep the rest of us going. To every single one of you — thank you. We need more of this energy. If you’ve been on the fence, consider this your nudge. Step up, speak out, and join in.
And because FAEA is a member-driven organization, I’m also asking you to participate in the democratic process and vote for the next board. We are servants of the membership — your voices are the compass that guides our direction. But a compass only works if you use it. So… use it!
On a personal note? I am ready to bring the party, the joy, the peace, and the fire — so meet me at the conference. Let’s make art, learn deeply, and dance like nobody’s watching. In addition to all of the amazing sessions don’t miss the free trolley schedule, Happenings, evening socials, So Surreal Market Bazaar, free and discounted museums, ESE Center’s Student exhibition at the James Museum, St. Pete Saturday morning market, 2 wonderful keynotes and so much more!!
On another note, many of you have reached out with concerns about the September 26, 2025, FLDOE memo addressing part-time, non-degreed teachers in Fine and Performing Arts. Your concerns are valid—and we share them.
The bill establishes qualifications for part-time, non-degreed fine and performing arts teachers to require background screening and documentation of a high school diploma and at least three years of successful experience in the specialization area.
Since the bill first passed, FAEA, in partnership with other arts associations across the state, has been fully engaged, considering the most effective response, and planning our next steps. Our stance remains firm: every Florida student deserves access to strong, sequential visual and performing arts programs, led by certified, high-quality arts teachers.
We promise to keep you updated and will call on your voice and action when needed. Know this—your FAEA advocacy team is actively working on your behalf.
See you in St. Pete — and get ready to make memories.
Together we are STRONGER.
Warm regards,
Latonya Hicks
FAEA President
