NPR war reporting provides background, context

Explanatory journalism is one of the hallmarks of public radio, going into the "why" of the events that affect us every day. NPR has featured this kind of reporting this month, as a new crisis in the Middle East has unfolded. We've gathered much of this reporting in one place for ease of reference, for whenever you need additional background or historical context for a better understanding of this complex topic:

KGOU Readers Club: Killing the Negative

Book cover featuring black and white photo of elderly Black man wearing a suit and bowler hat

While looking through Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographs from the Great Depression, visual artist Joel Daniel Phillips stumbled upon a haunting image—a 1936 photograph by Walker Evans with a gaping black hole in the center. This chance discovery of a “killed negative” led Phillips and poet Quraysh Ali Lansana into a multi-year collaborative project, Killing the Negative: A Conversation in Art & Verse, which is now also a book. Lansana talks with KGOU's Logan Layden for the next KGOU Readers Club discussion, Monday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
