"My center is the heart of every lover.

Every lover with a heart that loves Baba is a center."

Meher Baba

At Meher Center, 1956

Dear Meher Center Family and Friends,

Loving greetings from Meher Center.

Last month we shared a brief account of the first time Filis Frederick and Adele Wolkin met Meher Baba, which took place at the Center on May 10th, 1952.  We’d like to share another short vignette from that same time.

Filis and Adele had been allowed to spend the week at the Center with Baba and "the girls" (their term of endearment for the Eastern women mandali). They would be with Baba at the Guest House in the evenings, before he left at 6:00 P.M. On the evening of the 14th, Baba asked them to tell him a story.

Adele, feeling very nervous, stumbled her way through a story of Saint Peter.

At one point, Baba bent his head and stated, "Peter loved me the most — but even he denied me."

Delia asked, "Was that a conscious act or did he do it unconsciously?"

"None [of the apostles] loved Jesus as Peter did," Baba stated. "It had to be. It was God's will. He was conscious. Afterwards he realized me."

Delia said, "I always understood that Judas was unconscious when he betrayed Christ."

Baba explained to her, ‘The greatest service was Judas' betrayal. When he kissed Christ on the cheek, he did nothing. God did all. He behaved under a veil. He had the most difficult task to do for the Master of all the disciples." Baba then indicated that Judas, too, had been given Realization.

Turning to Filis and Adele, Baba remarked, "Nothing matters but love for God. Masts have this love. One must drown in the lake of fire and come out unscathed to reach God."

"Hundreds of years from now people will be talking about what we did here, what happened while the Master was here. And then I will come again — and again, and again — and so will you all.

"Filis and Adele do love me. You have been with me before. I have known you since ages; you do not know how long! Do not worry about anything. Only love more, and more, and more. Let these words be inscribed in your heart: 'Nothing is real but God, nothing matters but love for God.'"

Baba pointed to his own heart as he stated this, and his fingers seemed to "write" it on the hearts of his lovers present.*

A “New Life” Display at Baba's House

Meher Baba's New Life Blanket

With the anniversary of the start of Meher Baba’s New Life around the corner on October 16, a new display is ready for visitors to Meher Abode (Baba’s House) to enjoy. Baba’s New Life blanket is featured and folded to show Baba’s name in the lower right corner, “BABA.” It was used by Him either on top of or underneath His bedding roll at night to help protect Him from the cold ground or floor.

A New Life Salt & Pepper Shaker

A remarkable new item on display is this salt-and-pepper shaker carried by Eruch Jessawalla during the New Life. He was Baba’s chief interpreter and personal attendant, and he used it for seasoning Baba’s food. Note the “Tip-Top” name of this compact plastic shaker, ingeniously designed to open and separate in the center—one side for salt and the other for pepper.

Another treasure on display is the grinding stone used by the women mandali to prepare condiments for Baba’s food. During the New Life in Dehradun, India, coconut and spices were ground on this stone. The weather was so cold that even the spices needed warming before they could be ground—a small but memorable glimpse of the many practical challenges of daily life in the New Life. The stone was used again by both Mehera and Kitty Davy during Baba’s visit to Meher Center in April and May, 1952.

"His Grace is Unbounded"

In this highly emotional and touching video, Jeff Williams and Cynthia Thomas share their individual stories and how Baba eventually brought them lovingly together. Jeff’s early life was riddled with violence, some of which was extreme. (Just a note, some parts of his story are difficult to hear.)  Jeff felt abandoned by all, especially God, even though he also knew God was within. When he was in his early 20’s, he heard about Meher Baba and his life began to change.

Cynthia’s story is quite different. An only child, she was raised in an immigrant family in Boston and went to Catholic schools. But she never felt comfortable in her heart with religion. In her early 20s, she met a man, converted to Judaism, married and had three children. She also became a highly successful designer. But she was always seeking. Through a series of perfect Baba coincidences, Jeff and Cynthia eventually met, fell in love, married and they now live happily in Myrtle Beach.

"I really think I was three feet off the ground"

Andy Muir and his wife Peggy (the couple lovingly named "Pegandy" by Baba) met Meher Baba in Myrtle Beach during His three visits to the Center. This audio begins with Baba and Andy in Meher Abode. Andy said Baba would spontaneously appear and disappear again. Andy shares other stories and experiences he had in Baba's presence, such as cheerful throwing of Prasad and when He gave Pegandy the meaning and significance of His Damaan. One time, Andy stood in line to kiss Baba's cheek, and once he kissed Him, he recalls "I had never felt happier. What a privilege. What a blessing." During his time with Baba, Andy learned he didn't need to earn Baba's Love, as real love is unconditional; he just needs to hold onto His Damaan.
