DECEMBER 2024 STUDENT NEWSLETTER

A Look Back at CNAH's 2024: A Year in Review

This year has been remarkable for the Center for Native American Health (CNAH).

The highlight was securing the 5-year Indians Into Medicine grant from the Indian Health Service and establishing the Program Advisory Board (PAB). The PAB will enhance student recruitment strategies, strengthen partnerships with Tribal schools and community colleges, and support educational priorities from the Tribal Remedy Framework, following the 2018 Yazzie-Martinez vs. State of New Mexico lawsuit.

In 2024, CNAH team members engaged with hundreds of Native American students at various events in Pueblo communities, Albuquerque Public Schools, UNM, and the UNM-Gallup campus.

Key activities, including the graduation recognition celebration, welcome back event, informational sessions, and culturally engaging opportunities, continued to advance CNAH’s mission. We are committed to delivering public health education, research, and service based on Indigenous core values. Here’s to a productive 2025!

Hannah Nez is Navajo and a third-year medical student. She came to the School of Medicine from Chinle, AZ where she worked as an Integrated Behavior Health Coach. Hannah was introduced to CNAH when she was applying for Medical School. She shares that "CNAH has a place in the wellness of Native health students, but also in the community that these students will serve in in the future. As a future physician, I will return to my hometown and serve my community as an OB/GYN doctor, and CNAH gives me the support to continue this endeavor."

CNAH is honored to acknowledge students' hard work and their commitment to growing the health profession by highlighting their UNM-HSC journey. Best of Luck, Hannah!
