Data privacy is rarely at the top of anyone’s daily to-do list. It was probably not on your mind when you logged onto your computer, laptop, or mobile phone this morning. Many people do not understand the difference between data security and data privacy, which may be the reason why so many of us are slack about data privacy.
In the context of research activities, privacy means to be free from unauthorized intrusion or release of personal information. When people agree to participate in a research study, the researcher is responsible with protecting their confidentiality and anonymity.
IN BAD NEWS FOR U.S. CLOUD SERVICES, AUSTRIAN WEBSITE'S USE OF GOOGLE ANALYTICS FOUND TO BREACH GDPR
A decision by Austria’s data protection watchdog upholding a complaint against a website related to its use of Google Analytics does not bode well for use of US cloud services in Europe. The decision raises a big red flag over routine use of tools that require transferring Europeans’ personal data to the US for processing. 
U.S. STATE PRIVACY LEGISLATION TRACKER
State-level momentum for comprehensive privacy bills is at an all-time high. After the California Consumer Privacy Act passed in 2018, multiple states proposed similar legislation to protect consumers in their states.
CYBERATTACK ON RED CROSS COMPROMISED DATA OF OVER 515,000 'HIGHLY VULNERABLE PEOPLE'
A cyberattack on a contractor used by the International Committee of the Red Cross has compromised the personal data of more than 515,000 "highly vulnerable people." The hack has forced the Red Cross to shut down IT systems that support a program that reunites families separated by conflict, migration or disaster.
