10:30am Sunday Service: Whose Bones Do We Carry?

Our ancestors—familial and spiritual—have given us so much that we still carry. Which inheritances feel like gifts? And which feel like heavy baggage?

Speaker(s): Rev. Eileen Casey-Campbell (she/her)

Each Sunday, we will have several large-print copies of the order of service available. If you would like one, please ask an usher.

Tuesday, September 29 | Drop-In Discussion: The Bible and Folklore

Talking animals? Magical plants? A man who runs faster than a horse-driven chariot? The Bible and Folklore might be a controversial topic, but the reality is that the Bible does, indeed, contain such stories. Legend? Myth? Yes, these are found in the biblical writings. Reviewing just some of these examples, let's see what a reader might still learn from them. Presented by Daniel Chadwick. We meet via Zoom on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:30pm. Look on the First Universalist homepage for details and a link, or click the Zoom meeting link in this blurb title!

Tuesday, Sept. 29 | Watch Party: “Faithful Resistance in a Warming World”

Faith communities around Rochester will be gathering at Watch Parties on Sept. 29 at 6:45pm to hear noted environmentalist Bill McKibben speak on "Faithful Resistance in a Warming World: Climate, Courage, and Collective Action". Rochester Area Interfaith Climate Action (RAICA) is working with Chicago-based Faith in Place to offer two days of inspiring speakers culminating in gatherings where attendees can listen to Bill McKibben's talk and discuss how our faith calls us to respond to the climate crisis. Please consider joining a group from First Universalist at the St Mary's watch party! For more info and to register, go to aes-summit.org. There is no charge to register or attend. You will be able to RSVP to a local Watch Party after you complete the registration form.

Month of October | Social Justice Plate Offering: Person Centered Housing Options Inc (PCHO)

Our October Social Justice Plate Offering is designated for Person Centered Housing Options Inc, a not-for-profit organization that adopts a housing-centered, person-centered approach, which holds that individuals who are homeless must first gain access to permanent, safe places to live before stabilizing their lifestyle, improving their health, addressing harmful behaviors, and finding and maintaining jobs. Please give what you can to support this worthy cause. For more information, visit pcho.org.

Upcoming Coffee Hours

The first Sunday in October will be “celebration” coffee hour to recognize any special events in the month, and cupcakes will be provided. On Oct. 11, the coffee hour theme is “Harvest Abundance” and everyone is invited to bring a dish with a fall theme (please include a list of ingredients). NOTE: We are clearing out the individual coffee mugs that have been stored in the cabinet in the Clara Barton Lounge. Please pick up your mug by Nov. 1 and take it home. Any mugs left by Nov. 8 are up for grabs!

Saturday, October 3, 12-5pm | Mockingbird Farm Sanctuary Annual Fall Festival!

Animal Ministry invites you to a wonderful afternoon celebrating fall, animals, and the amazing work of Mockingbird Farm Sanctuary! Enjoy a fun-filled day while supporting the rescued animals who call Mockingbird Farm home. Plenty to see and lots of wonderful animals to meet! No dogs, please. Sunday, October 4 | In-Person Drop-In Discussion: The Tarot: A Mirror, Not a Crystal Ball

In times of uncertainty and fear, we may long for a crystal ball to tell us what comes next. But perhaps a mirror is more useful. Join Joy Leccese for a lively exploration of Tarot—not as fortune-telling, but as a centuries-old collection of images intertwined with religion, spirituality, astrology, Kabbalah, and other wisdom traditions. What might these enduring symbols teach us about how human beings seek meaning–and grounding–in times of chaos? Joy Lecesse will lead a discussion. In-person drop-in discussions meet at 9:15am in the Chalice Room and continue on the first Sunday of the month. All are welcome!

Tuesday, October 6 | Fellowship Club

We invite you all to the Fellowship Club! No need to RSVP. No expectation to show up every time. No pressure to explain if you are late or leave early. You are always welcome. Come as you are. There is a place for you here. Coffee is provided, and feel free to bring other refreshments you like. Show up, socialize, play a board game—or don't! We hope to see you there: first Tuesdays, 12-1:30pm in the Library/Clara Barton Lounge. Note: October will be our last Fellowship Club, as we enter the holiday season and work to offer exciting new programming in the new calendar year.
