For Ruth*, the holidays aren’t quite what they used to be.
She now lives in a residential facility, away from her family. She can’t easily go out and prepare for Rosh Hashanah on her own. The traditions are still important to her, but celebrating them looks different these days.
Then, a JFS Dallas volunteer knocked on her door.
They had come to deliver Ruth’s Rosh Hashanah package, filled with the familiar foods of the holiday. For Ruth, opening it was a reminder that even though she may be celebrating away from family, someone was thinking of her.
After her package arrived, she wrote to JFS:
“Thank you for bringing joy to those of us who are living away from our families. It gave me a warm feeling and made me realize how fortunate I am to be Jewish. Thank you for thinking of me. My best wishes for a healthy, happy and safe Rosh Hashanah.”
This year, volunteers delivered more than 700 Rosh Hashanah packages to community members across the Dallas area. Behind each one was a person like Ruth, opening their door to find that their community had remembered them.
For some, the package brings holiday food they can no longer easily get themselves. For others, it brings a familiar piece of a holiday once spent surrounded by family.
And sometimes, it simply means knowing someone's thinking of you.
Shana Tova from all of us at JFS Dallas. We wish you and your family a happy and healthy new year!
