Whatcom Family Farmers Call for Solutions
to Flooding, Water Management
|
|
"Farmers are calling for a comprehensive approach that pursues all possible fixes.... not only due to the devastation of the November floods, but also to dangerously low stream levels caused by drought just a few months before, and the harm that caused to salmon populations. Though seemingly opposites, both crises have the same cause. The Nooksack Basin does not have a water supply problem; the basin has a water management problem.” -- Rich Appel, President Whatcom Family Farmers
With ongoing recovery from November's devastating flooding disaster in Whatcom County, agricultural leaders continue pushing for better water storage solutions, sediment management and waterway improvements in place of a planned lawsuit by Washington State against water rights holders in the Nooksack drainage.

We're giving special recognition to BEST (Businesses Ending Slavery & Trafficking) and BEST Corporate Relations Manager Rebekah Covington, for recently launching #NOTALONE, a program to raise awareness by messaging directly to current trafficking victims.
BEST is one of three recipients of funds raised through the annual Birch Golf Classic. The program #NOTALONE partners with cities, counties, transit authorities, airports and seaports across Washington to encourage victims of human trafficking to seek help through multilingual signage at transit facilities. BEST also offers human trafficking prevention training for business and employees. Covington, a survivor of human trafficking, says the program sought input from people who've experienced trafficking to give those being trafficked hope and let them know there is a way out of the situation they are in. Read more about the program.
Plans are well underway for the 2022 Birch Golf Classic, also supporting REST (Real Escape from the Sex Trade) and The Whatcom Dream (transitioning from poverty through financial literacy) with the goal of raising $100k annually for each organization. Birch chose all three for the amazing work they're doing to help people transition from the streets to better life pathways.

The Golf Classic is the primary part of Birch's larger Community Gives program, supporting hundreds of organizations annually.
Since 2001, Birch has contributed over $4M in donations serving socio-economically challenged communities and organizations, health care research, hospice care, education, athletics, and the arts.
Birch's award-winning program received the 2021 Puget Sound Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy award alongside 75 Washington firms including Alaska Airlines, Paccar Inc., Microsoft, Costco, F5 Networks, KeyBank, and Kaiser Permanente. Read more about it here.
