Into the Fire: A Lesson in Servant Leadership

Friday night, just after 11 pm, I stood at my bedroom window and froze. The blue house behind ours, diagonally across the street, was on fire. What I saw was not just smoke or a flicker. It was an inferno.

Only a few weeks ago, a giant maple tree had been taken down, finally opening up a clear view of that house. Now, that same view showed nothing but flames consuming it. Within minutes, firefighters were everywhere. They swarmed from the front and back, raced up ladders, and broke through the roof to stop the fire from spreading. Thirty minutes later, the worst of the blaze was under control. By 2 am, the neighborhood was quiet again, the house boarded, blackened, and unrecognizable.

The family made it out. Thank God. But the suspicion now is arson.

Watching it unfold, I could not shake the thought: it could just as easily have been my block. My house. My family. There was no time for possessions, only people. And in the middle of it all, these firefighters charged into danger with no guarantee of walking out. Their courage left me in awe.

It made me think about servant leadership in its purest form. We often say the most valuable commodity is time. But what about our lives? For firefighters, pilots, construction crews raising skyscrapers, utility workers down in trenches repairing electric lines and water mains, and countless others, every day is lived on the edge of risk. Their lives are the currency they put forward so the rest of us can be safe, connected, and cared for. Do we notice them? Do we acknowledge the price they and their families pay when, in an instant, everything is zeroed out?

The irony is that just a week earlier, some neighbors had complained about the road closures for the fire department’s 95-year celebration. Traffic delays felt like a nuisance. But after that night, it was so clear. Honoring these men and women will never outweigh the inconvenience. Their bravery deserves more than applause. It deserves reverence.

Byte-sized Learning

Last week I had the privilege of moderating a session at the C-Vision International CIO & CISO Think Tank in New York. Our panel, “Re-Architecting the Enterprise for Agentic AI: Control, Collaboration, and the Next Frontier of Automation” sparked a lively and unscripted conversation about what is possible and what we must watch out for.

Here are the top takeaways you should get from what I am sharing:

1.The evolution of AI is about context and tools.

Traditional AI was rule-based. GenAI unlocked unstructured data. Agentic AI brings memory, reasoning, and tool-calling, making systems more adaptive and goal-oriented.

2.AI is like the world’s best intern with resources.

On its own, AI is eager but limited. With agentic capabilities, it is like giving that intern Google, Excel, and a calculator. Same energy, far more capability.

3.Fear and culture change matter as much as technology.

Employees often fear AI will take their jobs. Leaders need to frame the shift like the arrival of computers decades ago. The work changes, but people remain central.

4.Sustainability cannot be ignored.

Training and running large AI models consumes significant energy. The benefits are real, but organizations must balance innovation with environmental responsibility.

5.Guardrails are non-negotiable.

Agentic AI still hallucinates and mishandles sensitive data without controls. Retrieval-augmented generation, governance, and outside verification layers are essential.

Top Takeaway: Agentic AI is not magic. It is the next step in pairing human oversight with machine capability. Its success will hinge less on the algorithms and more on how we enable, govern, and guide them.

TIP of the Week

Don't wait until it's too late

Do not wait until the fire is blazing to fix what could have been prevented. Whether at home, at work, or in service, the small things we put off often turn into the biggest risks.

Check the batteries, close the loop, make the call, take the action.

Prevention may feel inconvenient in the moment, but it is always easier than repair after the damage is done.

Every Moment Counts

As I stood at my window Friday night, one thought kept running through my mind: it could have been us. It could have been the house next door. Life is that fragile, that unpredictable.

This week, we’re putting our carbon monoxide alarm back up, checking every battery, and saying goodbye to candles inside the house. We’re making sure the grill is always cleaned properly after use, no excuses. Because what happened reminded me how quickly things can change. Thirty seconds to spark. Thirty minutes for a commotion of fire trucks and hoses. And in the blink of an eye, a thirty-year dream can be reduced to ashes.

The lesson is simple but profound: stop putting off what matters. The time is now. Not tomorrow, not “later.” Safety, love, gratitude, presence....these are not things to delay. When the fire comes, there is no time to gather material things. Only the people you love.

Life is precious. Every moment counts.
