New Releases - You are the First to Know

Which wines get released when is determined by the availability of grapes in a particular year. As we grow our own grapes, we can predict the availability of the grape varieties and generally the varieties do not change from year to year. At times we decide to replant replacing one variety with a different one. Over the years and for historical reasons we group what we grow into two categories, (1) varieties planted with several acres in multiple locations, (2) small quantity production of less than an acre made into small batch wines.
White wines are ready to be bottled in the year after they are harvested, whereas red wines age for two or more years. Large wine corporations bottle their wines on an as-needed basis, to keep the shelves stocked as the consumer expects. Small wineries follow an annual rhythm, bottling white wines and Rosé in February or March following the year the grapes were harvested. Red wines from two years prior get bottled before harvest in late summer to empty tanks and barrels to make room for the grapes arriving in the fall.
Releasing the wine is driven by the current vintage selling out. Ideally there is no gap between selling the current vintage and introducing the next vintage. This is especially important when selling wine to restaurants and liquor stores. At Bookcliff we make sure that our tasting rooms and liquor stores remain stocked with our larger production wines, such as Ensemble, Malbec, Viognier, Friday’s Folly Red and Touch of Red.
We have more freedom when to release our small batch wines, such as Souzao, Tempranillo, Graciano or Reserve wines, that are not necessarily produced every year. Commonly, the small production wines are released to club members first and for general availability later.
For the first time in February and March, we hosted virtual tastings of new releases – either just bottled wines or small batch production red wines from the 2018 vintage. This was a great opportunity to hear from the winemaker and owners what influenced the wine making, the harvest and the impact of the overall growing season. We tasted Rosé 2020, made in a fresh and lively Provence style and the 2020 Viognier, which we make in a style that favors tropical fruit flavors. The Viognier is available in our Boulder and Palisade tasting rooms and the Rose in Boulder, but soon to be released in Palisade as well. We also tasted small batch production wines from 2018 – Tempranillo 2018, Souzao 2018 available for club members only in Palisade and Boulder and Reserve Syrah 2018. Tempranillo is known for its flavors of cherries and its food friendly character which is true for the 2018 vintage. The Souzao tastes unlike any other vinifera with bold and earthy flavors; the 2018 Souzao received a gold medal in the 2020 San Francisco International Wine Competition. We decided to make a Reserve Syrah 2018 from two select barrels, that we felt tasted exceptional. This Syrah is full-flavored and rich with a smooth finish.
