Economy adds 64K jobs in September, unemployment rate holds steady at 5.5%
The Canadian economy added 64,000 jobs last month as the country’s population continues to rapidly grow.
Statistics Canada released its September labour force survey recently, which shows the unemployment rate continued to hold steady at 5.5 per cent for the third month in a row.
Canada’s labour market has cooled over the last year as interest rates have risen, but the unemployment rate remains below pre-pandemic levels.
The unemployment rate averaged 5.7 per cent in 2019, the year before COVID-19 upended economic trends.

Canada invests $93.5M to accelerate home building in Hamilton
The Government of Canada and the City of Hamilton announced that they have reached an agreement to fast track over 2,600 housing units over the next three years. This work will help spur the construction of over 9,000 homes over the next decade.
The agreement, under the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) will provide over $93.5 million to eliminate barriers to building the housing we need, faster. It will allow for high-density development near rapid transit, including the future Hamilton LRT stations and make city-owned lands and brownfields available for development. Hamilton has also committed to expanding as-of-right zoning permission for housing, including amending a zoning by-law to allow for the construction of four residential units on one lot.

Toronto continues to lead crane index
There were more cranes over construction sites in Toronto than the other 13 key markets combined in the latest crane count report from international property and construction consultancy firm Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB). Overall, the company found a net decrease in cranes in North America since the first quarter, which aligned with a high project completion rate.
Boston and Toronto were the only cities in the report with increased crane counts in Q3, with Toronto’s 240 cranes leading all 14 centres by a wide margin.

Action, determination needed to influence change in EDI, says Khan at IHSA AGM
If we want to see a change in our world, someone’s got to take action, and if not you, then who?
That was the question Jennifer Khan, vice-president of inclusive diversity at EllisDon and keynote speaker at the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association’s annual general meeting, posed to the crowd.
It was also the question she had to think long and hard about before taking on the EDI role at EllisDon.
“I have a quote on my white board in my office…It says ‘if your heart’s not in it, your head and hands will not be motivated to excel,’” Khan stated.
