Q: I recently replaced a worn-out gear pump used for pumping fat in our feed mill. Is there a better pump type to use?
A: First, let me provide some general information on pumps.
The majority of pumps fall into two major groups: positive displacement and centrifugal. In each of these groups, there are many different types of pumps for different applications. And, in many cases, there are multiple types that can be used successfully for a particular application.
Positive displacement (PD) pumps operate by trapping a fixed volume of fluid and forcing that fluid into the discharge pipe. They theoretically produce the same flow at a given speed no matter the discharge pressure and therefore must be provided with a relief or safety valve to prevent damage to the pump, piping, or downstream equipment from over-pressurization.
PD pumps can be further classified into two general categories: rotary and reciprocating. As the names imply, rotary PD pumps move fluid using a rotating mechanism, and reciprocating pumps use an oscillating mechanism such as pistons, plungers, or membranes.
A centrifugal pump uses one or more impellers to generate flow and pressure dynamically as the impeller rotates. In contrast to PD pumps, a centrifugal pump has varying flow depending on pressure, head, and viscosity of the fluid. Centrifugal pumps can be further classified as radial flow, mixed flow, or axial flow based on the type of...Read More>>>

A new study by entomologists shows that the lifespan for individual honey bees kept in a controlled, laboratory environment is 50% shorter than it was in the 1970s. As the first study to show an overall decline in honey bee lifespan potentially independent of environmental stressors, this work hints that genetics may be influencing the broader trends of higher colony turnover rates seen in the beekeeping industry.
Colony turnover is an accepted factor in the beekeeping business, as bee colonies naturally age and die off. But over the past...Read the Rest>>>

The holiday season is often seen as the proverbial ground zero for out-of-control food choices—choices which effectively ruin all the hard work you’ve been putting in at the gym and kitchen over the months leading up to it.
But while none of us here at HealthSPORT recommend going completely off the rails with your diet (who wants to feel bloated and icky?), we DO urge people to remember that your healthy lifestyle is just that – A LIFESTYLE.
And guess what? Lifestyles have natural ebbs and flow to them. No one should feel...Read the Rest>>>
