In August, five MHO staff members represented MHO at the NeighborWorks Training Institute in New Orleans, LA, a five-day “mobile university” that brings together affordable housing professionals from across the country to learn and develop further skills related to the affordable housing sector. New Orleans was the perfect backdrop for this year’s NTI professional development. Like Western North Carolina and Asheville, it’s a place steeped in culture, resilience, and community spirit.

The timing coincided with the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and added a powerful layer of context. The lessons from New Orleans’ recovery offered invaluable insights. They showed us how to leverage lived experience to rebuild our own communities in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene and highlighted the importance of navigating hurdles with care and intention!

MHO and NeighborWorks America honor Whitley D. English!

MHO is proud to announce that Whitley D. English is a 2025 recipient of the NeighborWorks America Dorothy Richardson Award for Resident Leadership! Whitley is a certified community health worker and holistic healing practitioner, as well as the founder of WNC-GEMS (Generating Empowerment through Mindful Solutions). Through her leadership, she has engaged more than 80 youth and families with events that foster safe, healing, and nurturing spaces.

Her commitment to violence prevention, empowerment, and community connection embodies the spirit of Dorothy Richardson’s legacy, neighbors building strong, resilient communities together. Please join us in congratulating Whitley on this well-deserved recognition!
