Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is almost here, and it’s sure to be a spooky good time! Whether you’re out trick-or-treating, driving through neighborhoods or celebrating at home, safety and awareness are key to ensuring a fun and safe night for everyone.

Keep these tips in mind when celebrating Halloween:

General Tips from the National Safety Council

  • A responsible adult should accompany young children while trick-or-treating.
  • If older children are going out alone, plan an approved route in advance and agree on a time for them to return home.
  • Stay on sidewalks and in familiar, well-lit areas, and remind children to stay with friends.
  • Teach children never to enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
  • Remind children to cross streets at corners, use crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
  • Never stop in the middle of the street to pick up dropped candy.
  • Tell children not to eat any treats until they return home.
  • Check all treats for potential food allergens before consuming them.

Driving Safety Tips from the Aurora Police Department

  • Slow down and use headlights earlier than normal.
  • Watch for children walking along roadways, medians and curbs.
  • Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
  • Look out for children in dark clothing after sunset.
  • Avoid distractions such as cellphones or loud music while driving through neighborhoods.
  • Be cautious around parked cars. Children may step into the road from between them.

Richard Gary Black Jr. Nature Exploration Area

Aurora park and recreation supervisor honored with prestigious statewide awards

The Richard Gary Black Jr. Nature Exploration Area, located outside Morrison Nature Center at Star K Ranch, 16002 E. Smith Road, received a prestigious recognition from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association, celebrating its innovative design and commitment to creating welcoming outdoor spaces that bring people closer to nature.

Designed for visitors of all ages and abilities, this space encourages curiosity, creativity and hands-on discovery, giving visitors the freedom to explore and connect with the natural world around them. Discover what makes this award-winning destination one of Colorado's best places to play at AuroraGov.org/Morrison.

For nearly four decades, Todd Steinkamp, a recreation supervisor with the city of Aurora's Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, has helped make sports and recreation a cornerstone of life in Aurora. From organizing youth leagues to mentoring colleagues and supporting generations of athletes, his dedication to the community he calls home has left a lasting mark on Aurora's recreation programs.

Steinkamp received the Legacy Award from the Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics (CARA) during the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association Annual Conference in Breckenridge on Oct. 22. CARA’s Legacy Award honors individuals whose dedication and contributions have made a lasting difference in recreational athletics.

While Steinkamp's recognition celebrates a remarkable career, his legacy is perhaps best reflected in the thousands of players, families and fellow recreation professionals whose lives he has touched along the way. For Aurora, his lifetime of service is more than an achievement. It's a legacy that will continue to shape the community for generations.

Gas station with link to survey

Gas Station Survey final reminder

If you haven't taken our survey yet, we would love to hear your thoughts about regulations related to the development of new gas stations.

The regulations under consideration would potentially:

  • Limit the distance between new gas stations and existing gas stations
  • Limit the distance between new gas stations and residential neighborhoods
  • Place requirements for providing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at new gas stations

The city is seeking input through Friday, Oct. 31. Review the current conditions and scenario maps and take the survey at EngageAurora.org/GasStations.
