Message from Pastor Tim

Dear Friends and Members of the Ark and Dove Community,

Summer is for Sabbath, but late August is for plotting and scheming. That's what one elder who served Ark and Dove called it. Spencer Keyes used to call ministry plotting and scheming on behalf of God's dream for the world. That's how it goes, plotting out new programs, scheming with God's Spirit for a great Autumn and Winter.

The staff and worship ministry are working hard to set worship themes through December 31. One more meeting ought to do it. Watch for a preaching series on Peace.

Sept 8 Personal Peace

Sept 15 Peace in the Family

Sept 22 Community Peace

Sept 29 National Peace

Oct 6   World Peace

The Communion Calendar is set: Sept. 8, Oct. 6 World Communion Sunday, Nov 3 All Saints Day and December 1, the First Sunday of Advent.

Some CE leaders are meeting even this very minute to be fully prepared for Sunday School, Godly Play, Youth Group, IRIS and LOGOS. The week of September 15 is our launch.

The Stewardship Team is planning out the Autumn Stewardship Effort with Session.

Outreach and Connections is planning the Church Picnic and Chili Cook off for Sept 7.

Christmas Revels, not to be missed. Friday evening December 6 at 7:00 PM

Peace to you,

Tim

Message from Pastor Jenn

Dear Friends of the Ark and Dove community,

This week, I wanted to share a joyful poem with you written by Iranian-American poet and scholar Kaveh Akbar. As I prepare to preach this Sunday, I’ve been looking at Bible texts full of violent imagery, and so I’ve been seeking some balance for my soul. This poem, so evocative of being a young person with the giggles, is a helpful reminder of the effervescence of the Holy Spirit and how prayer can work in mysterious (and relatable) ways to bring us together and erase differences. Though you’ll notice their language and practices of prayer are somewhat different than ours, I’m guessing you’ll see something of yourself in this recollection of a moment of prayer gone perfectly awry.

How Prayer Works

Tucked away in our tiny bedroom so near each other

the edge of my prayer rug covered the edge of his, my

brother and I prayed. We were 18 and 11 maybe, or 19

and 12. He was back from college where he built his own

computer and girls kissed him on the mouth. I was barely

anything, just wanted to be left alone to read and watch

The Simpsons.

We prayed together as we had done thousands of times,

rushing ablutions over the sink, laying our janamazes out

toward the window facing the elm which one summer

held an actual crow’s nest full of baby crows: fuzzy, black-

beaked fruit, they were miracles we did not think to

treasure.

My brother and I hurried through sloppy postures of

praise, quiet as the light pooling around us. The room

was so small the twin bed took up nearly all of it, and

as my brother, tall and endless, moved to kneel, his foot

caught the coiled brass doorstop, which issued forth a

loud brooong. The noise crashed around the room like a

long, wet bullet shredding through porcelain.

My brother bit back a smirk and I tried to stifle a snort

but solemnity ignored our pleas—we erupted, laughter

quaking out our faces into our bodies and through the

floor. We were hopeless, laughing at our laughing, our

glee an infinite rope fraying off in every direction.

It’s not that we forgot God or the martyrs or the Prophet’s

holy word—quite the opposite, in fact, we were boys built

to love what was in front of our faces: my brother and I

on the floor draped across each other, laughing tears into

our prayer rugs.

-Kaveh Akbar

With you in joyful prayer,

Pastor Jenn

Verse and Prayer

Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

Ephesians 6:18-20

Guiding Love, connect with us through spiritual practices—breath, movement, song, prayer, touch. Comune with us through rituals—when we light candles or dip our hands in water. Accompany us that we might be a people grounded in compassion and tuned in to the ways of salvation. In a world of empire and overwhelm, bless us with your hope like a crown of wildflowers placed upon our heads. Amen.

Dear Friends,

This week, we have the great honor of having Nathan Little, trumpet, play the special music. I don't often get to accompany trumpet players, so it is quite a treat! I have never heard the trumpet sound so beautiful! Nathan is the husband of Felicity, who played the flute 2 weeks ago. They are a powerhouse musician couple, and we are so fortunate that they are in our midst! Please make sure you introduce yourself to them this week!

Our hymns this week are Today We Are All Called to be Disciples, Goodness is Stronger, and Will You Let Me Be Your Servant.

The Prelude is a piece called Gabriel's Oboe by the composer Ennio Morricone. You may remember a cello and piano arrangement that Brittany Wellington played a couple of years ago. Nathan will play this piece with the Piccolo Trumpet. He will then switch to the Bb trumpet for the Offertory Anthem. This piece is the third movement from Sonata in F by Venetian Baroque composer, Galuppi Baldassare. This piece was written during a time when the trumpet was emerging as a solo instrument, and it requires a solid technique and great agility from the trumpet player.

I look forward to seeing you this weekend.

With love,

Rebecca
