Joanne Gramazio Receives Certificate of Appreciation

On Monday, July 17th at the East Bridgewater Select Board Meeting, Joanne Gramazio was recognized for her dedication to cleaning up the streets of East Bridgewater. Since February, Joanne has been spending her time to picking up trash that has been carelessly thrown on the side of the roads. In about five months, Joanne has already filled 86 bags of trash! During the meeting she explains, "It really bothered me that there’s so much trash on the sides of the road. After work, I would start on certain streets and pick up the trash. Today, I have picked up 86 bags. My goal was to do 65 for my 65th birthday. Well, I’m already at 86 and I’m 65 so I’m going to keep going." Not only has Joanne picked up an extensive amount of trash, but has also beautified some areas of East Bridgewater, specifically the island at the corner of Walnut Street and Union Street, by planting flowers and putting down mulch.

The certificate reads, in part: "This certificate of appreciation is on behalf of the citizens of the town of East Bridgewater. The Select Board would like to extend their sincere appreciation to you, Joanne Gramazio, for unselfishly giving your time, willingness, and energy to beautify the town." Joanne's efforts most certainly deserve recognition, and we congratulate her for receiving this certificate and thank her for her dedication to the community!

Historical Tidbit:
1973 Sesquicentennial Celebration

The commemorative booklet from East Bridgewater's 150-year Anniversary documents the week-long celebration that took place June 9 - 16, 1973.  It details every day of celebration, including a reenactment of a Methodist Service led by a "Circuit Preacher" who rode up just in time for service on a horse, a water show at the YMCA pool, a Canoe race, and more exhibits and displays than you can shake a stick at. Thirty-four pages describe events and happenings.

Throughout the booklet, names jump out... Dale Julius, Indian Dance Team... Olde Candy Shop Float by Paula Coffey Dance Studio... Bob McCarthy sets up for the Chicken Barbecue at the Commercial Club (serving nearly 3,000 people) featuring an Alumni Concert by Richard Whitmarsh.

A favorite passage is the description of the hayride pulled by Edmond "Brother" Kenneally's three draft horses, Chief, Dick, and Ed. "The rides were such a tremendous success that at one point, a police officer was summoned to quell the crowd." Nothing like a hayride to bring out the animal in all of us.

Time sure does fly when you're having fun.

Climate Can-Do: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Everything we throw away contributes to polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink! We can minimize the amount of pollution by using a simple method: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

Reduce is first. It's the most important! To reduce the waste we produce, we reduce the number of products we purchase. Not only will being mindful of your purchases reduce the amount of waste on our planet, but it will also save you a a lot of money.

Reuse: Another way to help our environment is reusing the items and products that we might have thrown away unconsciously. Instead of tossing that shirt you no longer wear, donate it to someone who would wear it. Instead of purchasing a case of plastic water bottles, invest in a reusable water bottle. They are environment friendly and will keep your beverage cold.

Recycle: Recycling stops our trash from wrecking the environment. You would be surprised by the number of things that can be recycled, from mattresses to batteries; metal scraps to clothing and textiles. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection provides a search bar on their website where you can type the name of a waste item and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences explains: "Waste, and how we choose to handle it, affects our world's environment. The environment is everything around you including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled to be sure that it does not harm your environment and your health." The best way we can help protect our environment and health is to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Soulful Women and Girls Mandala Stone Painting

The Soul Project's Assistant Program Director, Liz Kenney, hosted two special art events. During these workshops, participants learned how to create beautiful mandalas on stones using paint and dotting tools as a form of art meditation. On June 30th, attendees had a lovely night of painting, socializing, sipping wine, and listening to soothing music. The workshop was so successful, The Soul Project decided to host the same workshop for girls on July 9th! Soulful Girls had multitudes of fun painting mandalas, sharing laughs, and listening to Kidz Bop. The young girls got creative and painted all sorts of fun designs on some of their stones!

The next upcoming Soulful Women event will be the launch of their new book club on Thursday, July 27th. The group will be reading Wheels of Life by Anodea Judith. Each book club meeting will include learning more about chakras, engaging in meaningful conversation and connecting with other Soulful Women. Learn more or register at Soulful Women's Book Club.

The next Soulful Girls event will be held on Sunday, August 13th. At this workshop, the girls will explore crystals and gemstones together and learn how to connect with them. They will also be gifted a special crystal that they get to keep! Learn more or register at Soulful Girls Workshop.
