Dear Buckeye,
We are writing to share an important update about the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) new immigration rule to eliminate “duration of status.” Just before the government’s scheduled implementation, a federal court issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the rule from taking effect on September 15. As a result, the immigration regulations for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors remain unchanged while litigation continues.
We understand that regulatory changes can raise questions and uncertainty. We want to assure you that Ohio State is monitoring these federal actions and following these developments very closely. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for October 2, 2026. The Office of International Affairs will be in touch with information and guidance once additional updates become available.
Please know you are a valued and important part of our Buckeye community, and we remain committed to supporting you. Your presence on campus contributes greatly to enhancing the Ohio State experience for all students, faculty and staff.
As always, Ohio State is dedicated to providing you with valuable resources to ensure your well-being. Should you need assistance or emotional support, students can reach out to the Office of Student Life’s Counseling and Consultation Service and staff and faculty may connect with the Employee Assistance Program through the Office of Human Resources. And you may always contact our immigration specialists at iss@osu.edu. They will do their absolute best to support you.
Updates will be provided to you and published to our Duration of Status web pages dedicated to international students and scholars as we learn more about this important issue.
Sincerely,
Kaya Şahin, PhD
