Case Study: SSD Replacements
Users at a local governmental agency were being bogged down by delays caused by the speed (or lack thereof) of their computers. When this was brought to the attention of Ridge Support and replacing the equipment was not an option, we had to devise a plan.
The original issue was related to two, maybe three, desktops so it was decided we would look to upgrade a unit to an SSD instead of the HDD inside to see if this produced the desired effect. It more than did that as clients report faster boot times, less lag / spin time, and just better performance overall. We believe it may be the best way to prolong the life of existing machines as this is quickly becoming a standard on new desktops.
What was intended to address an issue with two to three devices has ballooned as users have seen the improvement. Over the course of a month or two, we updated close to a dozen PCs and they offer a noticeable performance difference for the users. Less delays and less "Spin Time”.
The process takes about 90 mins per PC with a 512 GB drive. We start with imaging the drive to an external disk, then the physical drive is swapped out with a new SSD drive of the same size. At that point, we load the image onto the new drive and they are back up and running, right where they left off.
Since the initial tests, we have had a fairly consistent steam of requests for this to be completed on additional devices at the client.
To find out if this could be an option for your devices, please reach out to our offices and we'd be happy to discuss the best course of action for you.
