Sunday School
A Summer Sunday School class for adults will begin this Sunday, June 1, at 8:30 a.m., before the 9:30 a.m. worship service and will meet in the Phifer Library. The class will center on the book Elusive Grace: Loving Your Enemies While Striving for God's Justice by Scott Black Johnston. From his pulpit in midtown Manhattan, Johnston has a unique perspective on the ideological discord tearing at the nation’s fabric. He raises a moral voice that beckons us to become better neighbors, better citizens, better human beings. He calls for the church to model robust advocacy for justice, without denying the full humanity of those on the other side of the argument.

The Celtic Cross
During her sermon on Sunday, Sarah Chancellor-Watson described the symbolism of the Celtic Cross "...whose unique design dates back centuries to the Irish and Scottish Christians who created these often HUGE stone crosses set in the countryside as symbols of their faith and emblems of their devotion. In addition to the size of many of these crosses, what makes them stand out is their unique design which features a circle around the intersection of the two lines of the cross. Many Celtic crosses also feature intricate knot designs that are so indicative of that Celtic aesthetic.
| | | |
These crosses have come to mean many things over the centuries, from Christ’s halo, to knowledge, strength, and compassion, but the meaning that [my friend and mentor] Cathy shared on my ordination day was that 'these crosses express the belief that Christ and creation are interwoven. Christ, represented by the cross, and creation, the world, represented by the orb and at the heart of the cross, and the center of the orb, they are one. They share the same center. They emerge from the same point – out of the heart of God’s Own Being.*'"
*Cathy Hamrick, “Equipped for the Task; Sarah Chancellor-Watson Ordination” Sermon, July 10, 2016
Celtic Crosses stand on the communion tables of both our sanctuary and chapel.
