Orthopaedic Research Center is CNTR's Newest Affiliate Member

The Center for Orthopaedics, Injury and Research Innovation (COIRI), a clinical research consortium of investigators at the University of Maryland and the University of California-Irvine, joined CNTR as an Affiliate member last month.

COIRI investigators address the public burden of orthopaedic injuries, offering clinical research consulting and design services and immersive mentorship opportunities. We look forward to collaborating on some new projects!

CNTR is Advancing Federal Advocacy Priorities in 2026

CNTR continues to elevate the importance of trauma research and injury prevention in federal policy discussions. In May, we submitted a response to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Request for Information on its Strategic Plan Framework, urging NIH to establish a sustainable funding mechanism for adult and pediatric traumatic injury research.

CNTR has joined a broad range of coalition advocacy efforts directed to Congress. These included requests for increased FY2027 funding for the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), and gun violence prevention research.

CNTR also has supported coalition letters urging robust Labor–HHS–Education appropriations and strengthened federal investments in public health, research, workforce development, and healthcare innovation.

Through these coordinated efforts, CNTR is advocating for federal policies and funding that advance trauma research, improve patient outcomes, and strengthen the nation’s research enterprise.

Passing the Torch: Honoring Dr. Rosemary Kozar and Welcoming New SAC Leadership

CNTR is proud to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary leadership of Dr. Rosemary Kozar, who is stepping down as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) after serving in that role since the committee's formation, when CNTR was still known as the National Trauma Institute.

Over more than a decade of service, Dr. Kozar helped establish the SAC as a cornerstone of CNTR's mission to advance trauma research. Under her leadership, the committee fostered scientific collaboration, mentored investigators, and strengthened the development of competitive research proposals across the trauma community.

Dr. Kozar hands the reigns to Dr. Deborah Stein, who steps into the role of Chair, and Dr. Lauren Moffatt, who takes on the newly established Vice Chair seat.

Strengthening Trauma Readiness with Advanced Burn Life Support® (ABLS)

Burn injuries are among the most complex forms of trauma, often occurring alongside other life-threatening injuries. Rapid, coordinated care is critical, and the American Burn Association’s Advanced Burn Life Support® (ABLS) program provides the knowledge and skills to make that possible.

Designed for the interdisciplinary trauma care community, including surgeons, physicians, nurses, EMS providers, and rehabilitation specialists, ABLS offers evidence-based training in:

  • Immediate burn patient assessment and stabilization
  • Airway management for inhalation injuries
  • Fluid resuscitation tailored to burn severity
  • Transfer guidelines to verified burn centers

With flexible delivery in person or virtually, ABLS equips providers across the continuum of care with a shared, consistent approach to burn management—supporting the integrated trauma care that CNTR’s coalition champions. Tens of thousands of healthcare professionals worldwide have completed ABLS, advancing readiness and improving patient outcomes.
