From President Frank H. Wu:

Many of you have probably heard or seen news reports of the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding at the United States/ Mexico border. The combination of political unrest, economic instability, violence, and a devastating earthquake have caused thousands of Haitians and others to seek asylum or refuge in the United States. They are now either stranded among inhumane conditions at the Texas border or have been deported back to Haiti or other countries, according to the media.

We know that here in Queens—where we are considered the “world’s borough”— this crisis is upsetting to many in our community. Queens College offers our deepest sympathies to all those affected, including any members of the Queens College community who may have family members who are facing these extraordinarily difficult challenges. Our thoughts are with all Haitian refugees during this difficult time.

America has a long tradition of welcoming immigrants, and we hope that will continue. Just as the U.S. implemented Temporary Protective Status for Haitian immigrants over a decade ago, we are hopeful that humanitarian assistance will be provided in light of the compelling present-day circumstances. We encourage our congressional representatives to actively pursue the help that is needed and for others to make supportive statements addressing the needs.

Students who are directly affected by this crisis are welcome to contact Student Counseling Services at CounselingServices@qc.cuny.edu.
