ALPINE SKIING, RIDING & XC SKIING

Join a Ski Club

By Darryl Caron

Joining an alpine or cross-country ski club is beneficial whether you’re a skiing adult or family. It provides social connections, discounts on travel and gear, organized trips to new and exciting destinations, and a more convenient way to enjoy the sport with fellow enthusiasts. Clubs can also offer a sense of community through a variety of off-slope activities and help make the sport more accessible and affordable.

The OC Ski Club, also known as the Out of Control Ski Club, or simply the OCs, is one of the largest and most dynamic ski clubs in the Northeast. Established in December 1960, the non-profit club has over 1,000 members who share a passion for winter sports and social connection. Their mission is to make downhill skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing accessible and affordable for their members, who’s ages range from 21 to 80. Beyond the slopes, OCs offer a huge calendar of ski/ride events, year-round social events and fun parties, fostering a vibrant, active community on/off the mountain, so sign up for their email newsletters.

Day ski bus trips are perhaps one of the club’s most popular activities. Each week during the ski season, OC members can take advantage of savings of up to 50% at the top-rated downhill and cross-country ski areas in Upstate New York and Vermont. And because they travel in comfortable tour buses provided by Brown Coach, you can sit back and enjoy the ride for less than it would cost to drive yourself.

ATHLETE PROFILE

Kerry Flower

By Joanne E. McFadden

Kerry Flower is missing the Stockade-a-thon 15K this year, a race she loves, because she’s chasing a goal she didn’t even know she’d have before she ran the Jersey City Marathon in April.

“I’ve discovered within the past year that my best event is the marathon,” she said. She had never run over 18 miles when she decided to enter the marathon, yet she was the second overall female finisher with a time of 2:38:13. Her time surprised her. “I was really close to the Olympic trials standard which I didn’t think I would be able to do my first time,” she said. “Last year I was afraid to run over 18 miles, and now I’m chasing the goal of Olympic trials. My view of running has expanded into what’s possible.”

The area’s running community had a big part in that.

Kerry’s potential wasn’t always clear to her growing up. Wisely, her parents, Ron and Colleen Flower, started her in swimming. “I have ADHD – I have a ton of energy,” Kerry said. “My parents made me do sports at a young age because I wouldn’t sit still.”
