MERRICKVILLE - The smell of fresh-baked cookies has a way of stopping people in their tracks. It’s a simple moment that fits naturally in a village known for historic streets, independent shops, and a steady flow of visitors exploring the Rideau Canal. For many locals and tourists alike, that first warm cookie marks their introduction to Merrickville Cookies, a small business grounded in creativity, consistency, and a connection to place.
Owner Denis Boudreau explains “The business concept began in our home kitchen just south of Merrickville. The entrepreneur in me wanted to create something that would fulfill the need for tourists visiting a destination, something affordable, yet highly desirable. Everyone likes food, so I went with that," he explained.
Merrickville Cookies grew from a favourite family cookie recipe into one of the bases for an evolving lineup of flavours and toppings. “Customer feedback, demand, trends and supply chains influence the flavours,” Denis says. “We are fortunate that our flavours rotate as a reflection of popularity and availability of ingredients. If an ingredient is out of stock or too pricey, we turn to another flavour or create a new one.” This attention to feedback and flexibility ensures that each cookie maintains the quality and enjoyment customers expect while keeping offerings fresh and relevant.
“As my business grew, more people took notice. Carlos from Chaiya Decor contacted me to sell cookies at his location on the main strip in the village. At first I declined, but he was persistent and I eventually agreed. Frankly, it's what started the wholesale side of things, and it took off from there. It's wholesale revenue that balances slower retail times," Denis explained.
Building on that early success, Denis approaches each potential wholesale partner with carefully packed sample boxes, building trust through product experience and conversation. Ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible and expanded outward as needed to balance value and supply as production increases. “The reason we moved from a home-based kitchen to a commercial facility is solely based on volume,” Denis notes. “As the business continues to scale, we are planning to reconfigure our space to make operations more efficient,” he said.
Denis and his team continue producing cookies, cookie pies, and cookie dough while refining processes, training staff, and preparing for new contracts. Partnerships are central to operations, including collaborations with local businesses such as COBA Studios & Print Shop on waterproof packaging solutions for cookies being sold at waterparks. Memorable moments shape the journey. Denis recalls a chance meeting with the Voortman Cookies founder who visited the shop unexpectedly, a reminder that small businesses never know who might come through the door next.
Through steady growth, careful scaling, and attention to customer feedback, Merrickville Cookies has become a familiar and welcoming stop for residents and visitors alike. Offering a simple pleasure at the right price reflects the care, creativity, and local spirit that make Merrickville Cookies a sweet part of this heritage community.

| | | Success Through REDI Program | | |
Interest in the Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) program remains strong across Leeds Grenville as employers continue to explore new approaches to recruitment and retention. The program provides a pathway for eligible employees to pursue permanent residency while helping local businesses address ongoing workforce pressures.
Participation in the pilot has expanded across several sectors, with employers using the program to support skilled workers already contributing to their organizations. For many businesses, REDI has become one tool among several to help stabilize their workforce and plan for long-term growth.
The REDI pilot is still in continuation mode in Leeds Grenville, with the most recent OINP draw having taken place on February 2nd. Employers who are currently recruiting, or who have employees on work permits and are interested in exploring permanent residency pathways, are encouraged to connect with the Economic Development team to learn more about the program and available supports.

Program Testimonial
"Finding highly skilled machinists for our operation at Hewitt Ltd, is a challenge and we have recruited 3 very capable foreign workers, who are excited to work here and are keen to become permanent residents. We first heard of the REDI Program by attending a workshop organized by the Counties Economic Development Department.
We followed up on this initiative and now have two people nominated for the OINP program and one other with their applications in the system. This is a really important program for local employers to be able to recruit and keep highly qualified people.
The Counties Economic Development Department has been helpful in keeping us up to date on the status of the program and we look forward to having all of our applications go forward."
