Sandy Waters Brings Her Journey of Mediumship to Bridgewater

“We all have the gift of connecting to the other side,” says Sandy Waters, a Boston-area medium whose own journey into mediumship began with personal loss.

Waters began developing her mediumship in 2012 after her father’s death. According to her website, messages she received from other mediums helped her find comfort in knowing her father's spirit was still with her. That experience inspired Waters to help others find the same sense of peace while navigating their own losses.

Guided by teachers throughout her development, Waters has built a practice centered on what she describes as creating meaningful connections with loved ones in spirit and offering hope and comfort to those experiencing grief.

Her work includes private readings and group events, which she describes as opportunities to share her experiences and connect with larger audiences. Waters' website notes that her group events are often popular enough to sell out.

Waters also teaches about mediumship and the process of developing intuitive abilities. In promoting her upcoming Bridgewater appearance, she compares learning to connect with the other side to learning a language, saying it is about “investing time to learn how it works.”

During the program, Waters will share more about her journey into mediumship and discuss ways she believes loved ones connect with those they have left behind. She will then share several messages before opening the program to questions from attendees.

For Waters, the work grew from her own experience with grief into an opportunity to offer others the comfort she found after losing her father.

The Bridgewater Public Library will host Waters for an evening program this month.

Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to earn a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories, and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.

People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities, and breaks.

As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, first appearing in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.

The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in industrial centers nationwide, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when in June 1894, the American Railway Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, to add more power to a strike. It crippled railroad traffic nationwide. To break the Pullman strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers.

In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.

25 years later, how we remember 9/11

In The Amazing Spider-Man, volume 2, number 36, published on November 14, 2001, written by J. Michael Straczynski, Spider-Man said: “The sane world will always be vulnerable to madmen, because we cannot go where they go to conceive of such things. We could not see it coming. We could not be here before it happened. We could not stop it. But we are here now. You cannot see us for the dust, but we are here. You cannot hear us for the cries, but we are here.”

These Superheroes are ordinary men and women “made extraordinary by acts of compassion, and courage, and terrible sacrifice.”

Heroes are all around us. As Fred Rogers famously said " “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Bridgewater Rotarian Receives International Peace Award

Dr. Frances M. Jeffries, a member of the Rotary Club of the Bridgewaters, has been awarded the 2026 Rotary International Zone 32 Donald MacRae Peace Award for her long-standing work promoting peace, international understanding and humanitarian service.

The award recognizes a Rotarian or Rotary organization each year for work consistent with Rotary's goal of advancing international understanding, goodwill, and peace. Jeffries has been involved with Rotary since 1987, when she was inducted into the Turlock Rotary Club in California, and was among the first women to join the organization.

Much of Jeffries' Rotary work has focused on international service. She has helped develop and monitor adult literacy projects in Ethiopia and South Africa, assisted with literacy efforts connected to Water for Cambodia, and has served as a ShelterBox Ambassador since 2000. ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and essential supplies to people affected by disasters and conflict.

Her work also has a local connection. In 2020, Jeffries established Peace in Bridgewater and Beyond/International City of Peace, bringing a focus on peacebuilding and international understanding to the Bridgewater community. She currently serves as co-chair of Rotary District 7950's Peacebuilding, Conflict Prevention and Resolution Committee.

Jeffries' approach to peacebuilding centers on bringing people and organizations together, finding common ground and working toward lasting solutions. Her latest recognition highlights decades of service that have connected the Bridgewater community with humanitarian and peacebuilding efforts around the world.
