CEO’s Letter to the Community | | |
Dear Friend and Neighbors,
First and foremost, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire GECAC staff, I want to thank everyone who participated in our Annual Golf Classic and those who generously gave during Erie Gives Day. Your time, support, and contributions will have a lasting impact, helping us further strengthen our programs across Erie County.
Secondly, as we approach our 60th Annual Celebration, I am filled with deep gratitude. This milestone is more than just a chance to gather; it is a moment to honor the work we share. Work rooted in compassion, service, and a shared vision of building a stronger, more hopeful Erie.
We are especially honored this year to welcome Donna Bullock, former State Representative from Philadelphia, whose career has been defined by her tireless advocacy for children, families, and equity across Pennsylvania. We are also privileged to host Jason Kavulich, Secretary of Aging for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, who will share his insights on how we can continue to uplift and support our seniors. I am truly humbled that both have accepted our invitation to join this important occasion.
Recently, I’ve had the privilege of meeting with fellow Community Action Agencies from across the country. In many of those conversations, I was honored to lift the story of Erie. While we are not perfect, I was able to share that Erie is a dedicated network of people and partners who refuse to give up on the belief that Erie can and will be a better place. That dedication is what drives our community, powers our programs, strengthens our partnerships, and transforms lives in Erie every day.
Looking ahead, we know there is more work to be done! Such as expanding opportunities for families, strengthening support for our seniors, ensuring access to education and training, and breaking down barriers. These challenges remain, but with your partnership, they are also our greatest opportunities. Together, I believe we can build an Erie where every person has the chance to thrive.
Our Community in Action,
Dr. Ben Wilson

GECAC's Long-Term Care Ombudsman program advocates for residents living in long-term care facilities throughout Erie County. GECAC protects nearly 3,500 older adults, many of whom are unable to advocate for themselves due to dementia or health issues.
Our Ombudsman protects and promotes the rights and well-being of residents throughout:
- 18 nursing homes
- 22 personal care homes
- 1 assisted living facility
- 3 domiciliary homes
- 8 older adult day centers
Residents have the right to self-determination and to use their voice to make their own choices. This year's Residents' Rights Month theme, Stand with Me, highlights the importance of solidarity and support for residents who stand up and advocate for their rights, as well as the value of encouraging the community to join residents in sharing their voices.

Learning Opens Doors
Exciting Growth in GECAC’s Adult Learning Program

Did you know that Pennsylvania is currently offering free GED testing until funds run out? This unique opportunity has sparked a wave of individuals eager to earn their GED, and every Wednesday, our GED Testing Center is buzzing with activity. Adult students are tackling the four tests: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math. We’re thrilled to see so many people taking steps to expand their opportunities and create brighter futures.

Language is more than words—it is connection, opportunity, and empowerment. GECAC’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program is empowering individuals in Erie to improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. With guidance from our experienced instructor, Ted Tulloch, students gain the confidence to communicate at work, school, and in everyday life.
For many, learning English opens doors to new jobs, education, and citizenship. Each class is filled with determination and encouragement, showing how language can build stronger families and communities. The ESL program is just one of the many ways GECAC is building a stronger tomorrow for Erie.

Digital skills are also in high demand. Instructor Nicole Toy has been leading lively Digital Literacy classes, where students not only strengthen their technical abilities but also enjoy the process of learning together. GECAC's digital literacy classes teach adults the essential technology skills they need to navigate today’s world. These classes help learners build confidence with computers, smartphones, and the internet so they can stay connected, access important services, and succeed in the workplace.
