This Week: Earth Day, Nyack honored for Climate Initiatives, Water Main Flushing...

Mayor's Message

Hi All,

As you probably know, today is Earth Day—a fitting moment to reflect on the meaningful progress our community has made toward sustainability and climate action. Over the past decade, Nyack has taken important, measurable steps to reduce its environmental footprint and build a more resilient future.

One of the cornerstones of this work is the Nyack 2030 Climate Action Plan. This award-winning roadmap has guided our efforts across energy use, emissions reduction, and environmental stewardship, helping ensure that our goals are not just aspirational, but actionable. In addition, Nyack’s Silver Certification recognizes the Village’s continued commitment to meeting high standards in sustainability and climate readiness. These accomplishments didn’t happen by chance. They are the direct result of the dedication, persistence, and expertise of individuals who have made environmental leadership a priority in our Village government.

I’d like to especially recognize Marcy Denker, our Sustainability Coordinator, whose leadership has shaped and advanced so many of Nyack’s environmental initiatives over the years. Steve Cea has also played a key role, particularly in expanding access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure—an essential step in reducing transportation-related emissions.

Our gratitude also extends to the members of the Tree Committee, the Nyack Pollinator Pathway volunteers, and the many residents who have contributed their time and energy to protecting and enhancing our natural environment. Their collective efforts have strengthened the fabric of our village in ways both visible and lasting.

And, of course, Village Administrator Andy Stewart deserves special recognition. With a background that includes leading Keep Rockland Beautiful, he has brought both experience and passion to his role, helping to ensure that sustainability remains central to Nyack’s vision for the future.

Big news for Nyack—our community is being recognized on a countywide stage.

At the Rockland Municipal Planning Federation’s 35th Annual Dinner Meeting on April 30th, the Village of Nyack will receive the Planning Achievement Award for its forward-thinking Nyack Climate Vulnerability & Adaptation Plan.

This honor highlights Nyack’s leadership in tackling climate challenges head-on and setting a standard for resilient, sustainable planning across Rockland County.

The evening, held at the Crowne Plaza in Suffern, will also feature a keynote presentation by planning expert Susan Favate, offering a first look at the county’s comprehensive plan update, Envision Rockland. Additional awards will recognize outstanding service in municipal leadership and administration—but it’s Nyack’s bold vision for the future that will be in the spotlight.

On this Earth Day, we celebrate not just progress, but the people behind it—and we look ahead with renewed commitment to building a greener, more sustainable Nyack for generations to come.

Finally, if you want to celebrate Earth Day in style, check out the “Resonating Earth” event at the Angel Nyack tonight starting at 5. This is a collaboration between ArtsRock and Riverkeeper — an immersive experience of music and images featuring pianist Carolyn Enger, who will take the audience through a fusion of music and visual imagery from across the Earth. Tickets range from $15-55 and are available at www.artsrock.org

Have a great Earth Day, and a great week!

Celebrating Pauli Murray

I was delighted to attend a special event at the Rockland County Pride Center to celebrate the life of Pauli Murray, a pioneering civil rights activist, scholar, and author.

The celebration incuded a "collaborative portrait" painted by all the guests. It was a nice event, and I was happy with my very modest artisitic contribution to the portrait.

Congratulations to Louise Parker

Congratulations to our former Deputy Mayor Louise Parker (and the longest-serving trustee in Nyack’s 143-year history!), who was honored this week at an Orangetown 250 Recognition Ceremony as Nyack’s representative to the "Aides" to Grand Marshall Teresa Kenny for the upcoming July 4th Parade. Congratulations also to our representatives from our nearby River Towns, including Beth Chamberlain (owner of Nyack Boot Camp) from Upper Grandview and Kathy Perrotte (former Board Chair, Center for Safety and Change).

And my thanks to Carmel Reilly, Orangetown's Economic Development and Tourism Director, who has done such a great job putting together the Town's 250th Celebration. It was a fun event that was a small taste of what we'll be getting in July.

News from Nyack Water

Water Advisory Notice

The Nyack Water Department will flush water main hydrants in West Nyack and Central Nyack beginning on Monday, May 4, 2026 through Friday, May 8, 2026.

Hydrants are flushed to maintain water quality by removing mineral sediment, iron deposits, and biofilms (bacteria) that accumulate in water mains. This process keeps water safe, clears up discoloration, improves taste, and ensures hydrants are functional for emergency firefighting while also testing water pressure

Flushing hours will be between 9PM and 6AM. Homes using a booster pump should turn them off during this period. Crews will be conducting pressure and flow testing which may extend the flushing time schedule.

Your cooperation is appreciated. As a result of the flushing, water may be temporarily discolored and you may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure. If you experience discolored water, run your cold water line until it clears.

Public Service Announcement:

Nyack Water Department ID Cards

The Village of Nyack Water Department is committed to protecting our residents and strengthening community safety. Beginning today, all of our water department staff members have been issued ID cards to help prevent impersonation attempts by scammers or bad actors.

Each ID card now includes a secure QR code that links directly to the official Village website verification webpage. This allows residents to quickly confirm that the person at their door is an authorized member of our team.

How residents can verify staff:

  • Call us directly if you are unsure about someone claiming to represent the Village. 845-358-0641
  • Scan the QR code on the back of the staff member’s ID card; which links to the official Village website for verification.

Nyack is the first municipality in the county to adopt this enhanced safety measure, and we’re proud to lead the way in protecting our community.
