141 Dresses to be Shipped Across the World
On February 4th, Dress-A-Girl Around the World was honored to pack 141 dresses into a container that will be sent to Liberia by Ruth Koha James to help provide clothing to children. A blessing was placed upon the barrel by Rev. David Shimm, with Ruth Koha James and Gloria Moran present for the blessing of safe shipping and arrival.
Dress-A-Girl thanks all who were a part of this project, and all who sew, wash and iron, cut fabric, and donate materials, such as fabric, elastic, and shirts. All contributions, both through time or material, keeps this project moving forward and provides clothing for children around the globe.

Climate Can Do: Updating Massachusetts' Bottle Bill for a Greener Future
In 1983, Massachusetts launched the Bottle Bill, encouraging recycling with a $0.05 deposit on soda and beer containers. It worked well, cutting litter and boosting aluminum, plastic, and glass recycling. But times have changed, and this old bottle bill needs a modern makeover.
Two new bills are now before the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy and aim to refresh the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, addressing the challenges posed by today's beverage consumption habits and recycling issues.
The Proposed Expansion
Bill H.3676: An Act to Update the Bottle Bill. This bill seeks to modernize the Bottle Bill to meet current needs.
Bill H.3690/SB2104: An Act to Expand the Bottle Bill. This bill aims to broaden the Bottle Bill's coverage to include any drinkable liquid intended for human consumption.
Expanding the Bottle Bill aligns with today's beverage choices. The original law covered soft drinks, mineral water, beer, and malt beverages. Today's options have created a gap that has led to more litter and waste.
Updating the definition of "beverages" in the Bottle Bill removes this confusion. It's simple: water, flavored waters, iced teas, coffee-based drinks, and sports drinks should now have a $0.05 deposit. This expansion is expected to generate about $20 million in new revenue, with $5 million going to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). EEA will use these funds for various initiatives, such as municipal recycling incentives, recycling transfer stations, source reduction, and public education.
How To Support The Bottle Bill Expansion
Your actions can help Massachusetts move towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. Join the movement and be part of positive change!

Middle School Students Debate Climate Change at Kennedy Institute
On January 23, 2024, eighth-grade students visited the Kennedy Institute, where they were immersed in a Senate Simulation focused on climate change. Although the legislation they developed did not pass, they collaborated, debated, and experienced the role of senators. This visit allowed the students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a unique environment.

|
The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is dedicated to educating the public about the important role the Senate plays in our government, encouraging active democracy, launching civil discourse, and inspiring the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of their communities. The Institute is located on Columbia Point at the University of Massachusetts.
WBMSHS would like to thank the teacher chaperones, employees at the institute, and the Howard Trustees for awarding money to help offset most of the transportation fees so that our students could participate in this unique experience.

Valentine's Wisdom: Love Yourself
“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” ~Brené Brown
"Intimacy, by its very nature, requires us to be vulnerable. Our partner, lover, or mate can know us to our very core, sometimes better than we know ourselves, and that can make any of us feel totally exposed. Intimacy can be intimidating. However, it is an amazingly freeing experience when you can be completely who you are with someone you totally trust."
~ Barton Goldsmith Ph.D.
"To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable; to make yourself vulnerable is to show your strength.” ~ Criss Jami
Love will never be certain, but after collecting thousands of stories, I’m willing to call this a fact: A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all men, women, and children. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong.”
~ Brené Brown

I hope you spend this day, and every day, loving yourself, so that others can love you!
