Jesus Killed Mohammed
The Crusade for a Christian Military

By: Jeff Sharlet

May 2009

In "Jesus Killed Mohammed: The Crusade for a Christian Military" (2009), Jeff Sharlet describes Mikey Weinstein as the constitutional conscience of the military. Sharlet argues that a small but influential network of evangelical Christian officers and organizations within the U.S. military has promoted a worldview that blurs the line between military service and religious mission.

Using incidents from the Iraq War, allegations of religious favoritism at the United States Air Force Academy, and the advocacy work of Michael Weinstein and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, Sharlet contends that some military leaders have viewed conflicts such as the War on Terror through a religious lens, creating pressure on service members to conform to particular Christian beliefs.

He argues that this trend threatens religious liberty, undermines constitutional principles separating church and state, and risks damaging both military cohesion and America's relationships with the predominantly Muslim populations where its forces operate.

Jeff Sharlet is an American author, journalist, and academic. He is the Frederick Sessions Beebe '35 Professor in the Art of Writing at Dartmouth College. Sharlet is best known for his reporting and writing on religion, Christian nationalism, authoritarianism, and the intersection of faith and politics in American life. His books include C Street, The Undertow, and The Family, which was made into a Netflix documentary miniseries.
