Digital Object Identifiers minting service now available

UMaine Libraries now offers a service for minting Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for UMaine System publications, research, and shared objects. This service is available to any current student, staff, or faculty member from any University of Maine System campus. A Digital Object Identifier is a unique and persistent identifier and URL for a publication/object. It serves as an enduring path to the object's location online despite changes to hosting over time. DOIs offer many benefits to your work, providing permanent and stable access to your material. This enhances discoverability, making it easy for others to accurately cite your work. That, in turn, improves tracking and metrics, allowing automated systems to easily track citations of your work. For more information about DOIs, see the guide, or contact Open Scholarship Librarian Casey Koons.

Faculty: Request Materials or Place Items on Reserve

Merrill Library has a new Faculty Request Form! Faculty can now use this form to request materials for purchase—whether for a specific course or to support a program or major—and to place new or existing library materials on course reserve.

Please note: all requests must be approved by your department chair before submission.

New from Special Collections and Projects: Papers of Arline Kenyon Thomson

The Special Collections and Projects Department in Fogler Library has added new records to the online archival content management tool ArchivesSpace.

The papers of the Maine-based artist Arline Kenyon Thomson (1912–2010) have been processed, revealing the dedication and passion in her life’s work. Thomson was employed by the University of Maine as, successively, a freelance artist, a graphic designer for the Department of Public Affairs and Central Services, and a book designer for the University Press.

The Thomson collection spans from her childhood artwork, to her early correspondence with her husband, Professor Robert Thomson, to original copies of linoleum block prints, all very well preserved by Arline Thomson.

From the start of her life in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Thomson was deeply interested in drawing what she saw around her, in fashion and ballet magazines in particular. Over her life, Thomson collected a staggering amount of magazine clippings pertaining to ballet, theatre, and art history, which spanned from the 1920s to the 1990s. The collection includes all of these clippings, along with her sketches and notes on them when she would use the pictures as references for her early career as an illustrator. She thought the crowning achievement of her career was the publication of her book, “Discovering Elizabethan London,” in 1994, which was a collection of her pen and ink sketches of historical sites in London, along with her travel notes from walking around the city. Her travel memorabilia from the trips she took to the U.K. with her husband to tour the country’s cathedrals, monasteries, and parks, are a part of this collection. It is clear, when looking through the collection of her life’s papers, that Thomson valued the preservation of the history of the arts. Her contributions to the arts at the University of Maine will not be forgotten.
