Message from the Superintendent

Dear Members of the Bowling Green City Schools Community,

Last week marked the end of the first quarter of the 2026–2027 school year. Time is certainly flying by! As our fall sports seasons begin to wind down, our student musicians have been busy sharing their talents through fall concerts and performances. It has been a successful fall for Bowling Green City Schools, both athletically and musically, and we are proud of the accomplishments of our students and staff.

I would like to recognize our October BGCS Staff Member of the Month, Krista Kerin, Building Secretary at Conneaut Elementary School. Her colleagues describe her as “the heart of Conneaut and a dedicated individual whose kindness and outstanding work ethic keep the school running smoothly each day. She regularly pauses what she is doing to assist someone else and often addresses problems before they arise.” Congratulations, Krista, and thank you for all you do for Conneaut and Bowling Green City Schools. Your dedication and commitment make a meaningful difference in our school community.

The District’s fall newsletter is complete and will be delivered to the post office this week. We anticipate that every district resident will receive a copy by the end of next week. We hope you enjoy this semiannual publication, which highlights the outstanding work, accomplishments, and experiences of our students and staff throughout the district.

A few weeks ago, our high school staff had the opportunity to tour the new Bowling Green High School currently under construction. This was the first opportunity for staff members to step inside the building, experience the space firsthand, and begin to envision what the future high school will look like when complete. I believe everyone left the tour impressed with what they saw and even more excited to see this vision becoming a reality. The progress is exciting, and it is rewarding to see the plans for our new high school take shape.

Planning for the district’s elementary facilities also continues in partnership with our architectural team, a process that began last spring. We have completed the focus group meetings with grade-level teams and specialty-area staff from each of our three elementary schools. These discussions have provided valuable input as we continue evaluating the needs of our students, staff, and school communities.

I have also been communicating with the City of Bowling Green and the BG Economic Development team to explore potential locations for a new elementary school or schools. Whether the district ultimately pursues one or two new buildings remains to be determined. In addition, discussions are underway regarding the potential future uses of the current Conneaut and Kenwood sites should those buildings no longer serve as active school facilities.

Our goal is to thoroughly evaluate all aspects of these potential changes and provide our community with as much information as possible as the process moves forward. We recognize the importance of thoughtful planning, transparency, and community understanding as we consider the future of our elementary facilities.

At next month’s Board of Education meeting, our architectural team will present an overview of the work completed to date and share updates on the planning process. This work will continue in the months ahead, and I look forward to providing additional information as we make progress toward determining the best path forward for our district.

I am honored to serve the students, families, community, and staff of Bowling Green City Schools. I promise that our District will work hard to improve each day to provide a high-quality education for our students, a financially sound organization for our stakeholders, and be a point of pride for the entire community.

Go Bobcats,

Dr. Ted Haselman

Superintendent

BGHS Students Honor Life and Legacy of BGHS Class of 2008 Graduate Through Day of Service

The inaugural BGHS Day of Service was a success! On their day off from school, Model UN and Drama Club students came together yesterday, to honor the life and legacy of Kapil Melkote, a 2008 BGHS graduate and former member of Drama Club, Model UN, and BGHS Band. His life reflected compassion, kindness, and a commitment to serving others.

The BGHS Day of Service brought students together to volunteer at several locations throughout Bowling Green, including the Wood County District Public Library, Wood County Senior Center, Habitat for Humanity, Bowling Green Parks and Recreation, City of Bowling Green, and BGHS. Students participated in a variety of service projects, from beautification and cleanup efforts to organizing materials, assisting local organizations, and connecting with senior citizens.

Before heading to their volunteer sites, students heard a few inspiring memories from Kapil’s mother, Malavika Melkote, Dr. Gonzalez and Mrs. Kern, his former teachers, and Dylan Stretchbery, Kapil’s friend and former BGHS classmate from the Class of 2008. They encouraged students to recognize the difference they can make. Some of Kapil's family members and friends also joined the students for this special day of remembrance and service.

The event provided students with an opportunity to honor Kapil’s legacy while demonstrating the importance of giving back to the community. Through their time and service, these Bobcats helped carry forward his spirit of compassion and commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
