Mass Audubon South Coast Ospreay Project Presentation

The Holmes Public Library welcomed Pamela Lowell to make a presentation about her experiences volunteering with the Mass Audubon South Coast Osprey Project on the Westport River. This project is meant to monitor Ospreys and the outcome of their breeding attempts to contribute to scientific research on the species and the environment.

Pamela Lowell had a PowerPoint consisting of a mix of beautiful photography, videos, and original artwork she created. She even asked for participation from the audience to demonstrate how young chicks are banded. For more information, visit MassAudubon.org.

Historical Tidbit:

 First Automobile in Halifax

The first automobile to be seen on the streets of Halifax by was in 1910. It belonged to the doctor who lived in Bryantville.

At this time one did not need to take any examination to have a license, all he had to do was show that he had bought the automobile and that he had driven it 100 miles. How one went about proving he had driven 100 miles one can only guess at.

In North American, a law went into effect in New York on August 1, 1910, making it official that a document known as a driver’s license, which states that a person may operate a motorized vehicle on a public roadway be used. Initially, it only applied to professional chauffeurs.

Ready to pick up a new book? Join the Holmes Public Library at their monthly nonfiction book club! For March, the book of the month is Maid by Stephanie Land, which was adapted into a TV series on Netflix. A brief description of the book is below:

"At 28, Stephanie Land's dreams of attending a university and becoming a writer quickly dissolved when a summer fling turned into an unplanned pregnancy. Before long, she found herself a single mother, scraping by as a housekeeper to make ends meet. Maid is an emotionally raw, masterful account of Stephanie's years spent in service to upper middle-class America, as a 'nameless ghost' who quietly shared in her clients' triumphs, tragedies, and deepest secrets. Driven to carve out a better life for her family, she cleaned by day and took online classes by night, writing relentlessly as she worked toward earning a college degree. She wrote of the true stories that weren't being told."

Climate Can-Do: Preventing Food Waste at Home!

We waste food in our households daily without realizing how much. One-third of all food in the United States is left uneaten. Solving this easily preventable problem can reduce our environmental footprint and save us money!

1) Plan and prep weekly meals. Make a list of what you need and estimate how much you will eat. This will help prevent overshopping and save you money.

2) Know the proper way to store food. This helps it last longer and reduces food rot. Most vegetables, especially ones that wilt, such as lettuce, should be placed in the fridge's high-humidity drawer. Other fruits and vegetables that could rot should go in the low-humidity drawer. To help prevent mold, make sure to wait to wash your berries until you are ready to eat them.

3) When cooking and preparing meals, it is good to repurpose and use ingredients you already have or leftovers to make something new rather than buying more food or throwing leftovers away. A little imagination helps when repurposing some food that's past its prime: stale bread makes great croutons!

Taking these steps to prevent food waste can benefit you and our environment, so let's continue moving forward!
