BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

As the air turns crisp in our backyards and we welcome the final two months of the year, we take a moment to reflect on the people, cultures, and shared experiences that strengthen our community. With Hispanic Heritage Month having recently come to a close, NAJIT recognizes and celebrates the many individuals within our profession who identify as Hispanic, Latino, Latina, or Latinx, whose cultures, languages, and contributions enrich our field well beyond a single month of recognition.

As we carry this spirit of community and appreciation forward, we turn our attention to the ongoing work of NAJIT's leadership and efforts to represent our association, exchange ideas, and foster professional connections.

NAJIT Leadership at the ATA Conference

The entire NAJIT Board of Directors, along with Executive Director Kay Gonzalez, attended the American Translators Association's 67th Annual Conference (ATA67). The Board took this opportunity to hold its monthly meeting in person during the conference.

NAJIT leadership participated in several conference events, contributing to conversations on professional ethics, leadership, and the future of our field.

Future of Ethics Panel: NAJIT Chair Eliane Sfeir-Markus facilitated the panel, with Dr. Janis Palma, NAJIT Director-at-Large, participating as a panelist.

National Leadership Summit: NAJIT Chair Eliane Sfeir-Markus joined fellow association leaders as a panelist.

Presentation: Chair Eliane Sfeir-Markus also delivered a presentation titled “Time for Introspection: Our Why and Our How.”

Sponsorship Outreach: NAJIT Secretary P. Diane Schneider and Vice Chair Mayra Cardona engaged in promising sponsorship outreach during ATA67, building connections and exploring opportunities to support NAJIT's 48th Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.

NAJIT Advancing Language Access in Brazil: The Launch of Interprêt

NAJIT Treasurer Jaqueline Nordin represented the association at the October 27 launch of Interprêt in São Paulo, Brazil, an initiative developed through a collaboration between Mackenzie Presbyterian University and Brazil's Federal Court of the 3rd Region.

The platform is designed to help courts identify qualified interpreters by specific language pairs, verify professional qualifications, and connect interpreters with judicial proceedings. Supporting 407 languages, including Indigenous languages, Interprêt represents an important development in efforts to strengthen language access and due process within Brazil's judicial system.

For Jaqueline, this initiative also reflects years of dedication to court interpreter education. Since 2011, she has worked alongside Judge Paulo Marcos Rodrigues de Almeida on efforts to train judges in working effectively with interpreters and support the development of qualified court interpreting professionals.

NAJIT looks forward to recognizing this milestone and the continued collaboration advancing court interpreting and access to justice internationally.
