NATIONAL SOFT ICE CREAM DAY
National Soft Ice Cream Day on August 19 gives us a tasty way to cool off on a hot summer day. Whether you enjoy it in a bowl or on a cone, grab some soft serve and enjoy!
In 1934 on Memorial Day weekend in Hartsdale, New York, Tom Carvel had a flat tire. After pulling his ice cream truck into a parking lot, the businessman knew his product was melting. As vacationers drove by, Carvel sold the softened ice cream to them. Surprisingly, they loved the soft ice cream! The potential for a new dessert was not lost on the salesman. Instead of a roving ice cream truck, Carvel could have a fixed location with soft ice cream.
Two years later, Tom Carvel opened his first ice cream store on the site where his truck broke down. In the preceding years, Carvel patented a super low-temperature ice cream machine and created a secret formula ice cream.
It wasn't long before other businesses began to crop up. The hard ice cream industry began to object. Despite both products providing similar flavors, servings, and enjoyment, they were different. Hard ice cream business did suffer a reduction in revenue during the first years of soft ice cream's popularity. Even the Minnesota legislature passed laws prohibiting the sale (technically by law it was considered to be ice milk) of soft-serve ice cream from a machine. It had to be sold pre-packaged. The law was later changed. (Star Tribune, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 19 Aug 1951).
Soft vs. Hard Ice Creams
How different are soft and hard ice creams? While they are made with the same ingredients, soft ice cream has less milk fat. It also has more air than hard ice cream. Both of these factors contribute to the ice cream being more delicate and smoother. The milk fats in the hard ice cream cause it to be firmer when frozen.
Another difference is the temperatures the ice creams are kept frozen. Soft ice cream machines keep a temperature of -6°C. However, hard ice cream is kept at a temperature of -12°C. While that might not seem like a big difference, the evidence is in the ice creams.

Uptown, Tuesday Market in New OrleansNext Market: August 20, 2024
8 AM - 12 PM
Uptown Square
200 Broadway Street at the River
Directions and Parking Tips
The Tuesday Market is located Uptown near the Mississippi River levee at Tulane University Square (originally known Uptown Square). Find us in the northeast corner of the parking lot between Leake Avenue and Broadway Street. There's plenty of free onsite parking.
RTA Lines 57, 31, and 32 pass right by market! Click here to view route 57 or click here for route 31/32.
From I-10
From I-10/Pontchartrain Expressway, take the South Carrollton exit. If you're coming from Metairie, the ramp will merge with South Carrollton heading toward the Mississippi River; if driving from Downtown or New Orleans East, turn left at the first traffic signal (Palmetto Street) then right at South Carrollton. Go 2.2 miles to the end of South Carrollton and turn left on Leake Avenue. With the levee on your right, continue 0.8 miles; the Market will be in the parking lot to your left, just before Leake meets Broadway.
No Cash? No Problem!
All of our vendors accept cash and tokens. Swipe for tokens on-site at the orange Welcome Tent with debit, credit, or EBT SNAP.
Shop with SNAP!
Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.
Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.

2024 Full Moon schedule
(all times Eastern)
- Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
- Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
- Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

An eclectic group of adults… playing six mid-pubescents, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. [Rated: PG-13]

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

NATIONAL POTATO DAY
Ah, spuds. On August 19 each year, the humble potato takes center stage. In truth, though, doesn't it steal the show at nearly every meal?
Whether baked, fried or mashed, these taters bring on the flavor. They are a staple of many meals, too. Filling a void for appetizer dishes and working double duty at suppertime, these versatile root veggies satisfy and fill us up.
According to the International Potato Center, more than 4,000 varieties of potatoes grow around the world. Not only that, but they also come in a variety of beautiful colors and sizes. This starchy carbohydrate comes with no fat or cholesterol and is loaded with Vitamin C and potassium. Depending on your dietary needs and how you prepare your potatoes, this vegetable offers what many are looking for. However, with 26 grams of carbohydrates, it's a no-no in a low-carb lifestyle.
When it comes to the health specs of a potato, we tend to tank the benefits when we prepare them. We fry them and load them with toppings like cheese, sour cream, and butter. Who doesn't love a loaded baked potato? Ok, ok. You can all put your hands down, now.

Top 7 Ancient Proverbs That Are Still Relevant Today
A Journey Back in Time
Proverbs are ancient wisdom dressed in short phrases. They have been passed down through generations, offering timeless wisdom that continues to resonate today. Despite the changes in society and advancements in technology, these proverbs remain relevant, providing guidance in our personal and professional lives. Let's step back in time and explore seven ancient proverbs that still hold true today.
"A Stitch in Time Saves Nine" - English Proverb
This proverb dates back to the 18th century and serves as a reminder to address minor issues before they become major problems. In today's fast-paced world, we often ignore small problems, letting them balloon into something much bigger. This proverb encourages us to act promptly, as immediate action can prevent more serious consequences down the line. Whether it's a leaky faucet, a pending assignment, or a health check-up, addressing it sooner rather than later can save time, effort, and resources.
"Fall Seven Times, Stand Up Eight" - Japanese Proverb
Resilience is at the heart of this Japanese proverb. It encourages us to keep going, no matter how many times we fall or how hard the journey becomes. Today, in our personal and professional lives, we face various challenges and setbacks. This proverb serves as a reminder that failure is not the end, but a stepping stone to success. It's about learning from our mistakes, picking ourselves up, and moving forward with renewed determination.
"The Best Time to Plant a Tree Was 20 Years Ago. The Second Best Time Is Now." - Chinese Proverb
This Chinese proverb is a powerful metaphor about the importance of taking action today. Often, we regret missed opportunities, wishing we had started earlier. But this proverb reminds us that it's never too late to start. Whether it's starting a new project, learning a new skill, or making a lifestyle change, the best time is now. This proverb encourages us to take action today for a better tomorrow.
"When the Wind of Change Blows, Some Build Walls, Others Build Windmills" - Chinese Proverb
Change is an inevitable part of life. This Chinese proverb offers two contrasting reactions to change: resistance or adaptation. Building walls symbolizes resistance, while building windmills represents harnessing the power of change. In today's ever-evolving world, this proverb underscores the importance of adaptability and innovation. Instead of resisting change, we should embrace it, turning challenges into opportunities.
"It Takes a Village to Raise a Child" - African Proverb
This African proverb underscores the crucial role community plays in raising a child. It suggests that upbringing and education are not solely the responsibility of parents, but of the entire community. Today, with the rise of social media and digital technology, this proverb reminds us of the importance of real-world interactions and community involvement in a child's development. It encourages us to foster a supportive and nurturing environment for the younger generation.
"The Tongue Has No Bones, But It Is Strong Enough to Break a Heart" - Arabic Proverb
Words have power. This Arabic proverb emphasizes the impact of our words, reminding us to speak with kindness and respect. In today's digital age, where communication is often virtual, this proverb is more relevant than ever. It reminds us to think before we speak or write, to consider the impact of our words on others. It encourages positive and respectful communication.
"Not Everything That Is Faced Can Be Changed, But Nothing Can Be Changed Until It Is Faced" - James Baldwin
While not ancient, this proverb by James Baldwin, an American writer and social critic, still holds a great deal of relevance. It speaks to the importance of confronting problems and challenges head-on. In today's complex world, this proverb reminds us that denial or avoidance does not lead to resolution. It encourages us to face our challenges, as only then can we begin to enact change.
Wrapping Up
Ancient proverbs are a treasure trove of wisdom, offering timeless insights and guidance. Despite the passage of time, these seven proverbs continue to resonate, offering valuable lessons in resilience, action, adaptability, community, communication, and confronting challenges. They remind us of the importance of dealing with issues promptly, embracing change, fostering community, using words wisely, and facing challenges head-on. As we navigate through life, may these proverbs serve as a guiding light, illuminating our path with their age-old wisdom.

“New Orleans, circa 1903: A panoramic view of Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral, captured in a stunning blend of two 8x10 inch glass negatives by the Detroit Photographic Company. This historical image offers a detailed glimpse into the city's architectural and cultural heritage.”
In the early 1900s, New Orleans was a city of rich history and vibrant culture, and a panoramic photograph from 1903 vividly captures its charm. Taken by the Detroit Photographic Company, this image is a remarkable fusion of two 8x10 inch glass negatives, presenting a detailed and expansive view of Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral.
Jackson Square, the heart of the French Quarter, was bustling with activity and framed by the elegant architecture of the era. The photograph reveals the square’s neatly arranged layout, with its wrought-iron fences, manicured gardens, and lively atmosphere. The square was a hub of social and cultural life, where locals and visitors alike gathered to enjoy the vibrant street scene, and artists and vendors displayed their work.
At the center of the image stands St. Louis Cathedral, an iconic symbol of New Orleans. Its grand facade, with its distinctive spires and intricate details, dominates the skyline. The cathedral's architectural beauty and historical significance are beautifully showcased in the photograph. It had been a focal point of the city since its construction in the 18th century and continued to be a central part of New Orleans’ religious and cultural life.
The Detroit Photographic Company’s use of glass negatives allowed for an impressive level of detail and clarity, capturing the fine elements of the cathedral’s design and the bustling activity around Jackson Square. The panoramic format offered a broad view, illustrating not only the grandeur of the cathedral but also the lively interaction of people within the square.
As the photograph was developed and presented to the public, it provided a window into a bygone era. The image depicted a city on the brink of the 20th century, maintaining its rich traditions while embracing modernity. The people in the photograph, dressed in the fashion of the time, reflect the daily life of New Orleans—a blend of elegance and casual charm.
This historical photograph remains a valuable record of New Orleans' architectural and cultural heritage. It captures the essence of a city known for its distinctive character and enduring legacy. As viewers look at the panoramic image today, they are transported back to a time when Jackson Square was a vibrant center of life, and St. Louis Cathedral stood as a timeless beacon amidst the dynamic cityscape of early 20th-century New Orleans.

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.
To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.
Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail
Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29
Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws
New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.
The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.
Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.
“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”
Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.
The workshops will cover critical topics such as:
- The implications of being armed in public
- Staying safe by avoiding danger
- Pre-threat indicators
- De-escalation
- Using force
- Seeking further training
- Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana
"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."
To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
