For many families, having a job doesn't always mean having enough income to afford a stable home. With the rising cost of housing and everyday expenses, even hardworking parents can find themselves struggling to make ends meet.
For Yorubia, a single mother of four who has experienced homelessness, finding stability means more than having a place to call home. It means creating a future where her family can thrive.
In September 2025, Yorubia joined Nicholas House's New Horizons program in DeKalb County, which provides permanent supportive housing and individualized case management to families who have experienced persistent homelessness and face additional barriers to stability.
Although Yorubia was already employed when she entered the program, maintaining a job while raising four children is only one piece of the puzzle. With the stability and support provided through New Horizons, she has been able to focus on strengthening her family's financial future.
Since joining the program, Yorubia has maintained consistent employment and made every monthly rental contribution on time. She's also demonstrated a strong commitment to personal and professional growth, achieving perfect attendance in Nicholas House's workplace readiness workshops.
Her goals are clear: build her savings, increase her income, and become financially independent. With her children's needs guiding her decisions, Yorubia is thoughtfully planning to take on additional work hours once the school year ends, allowing her to pursue greater earning opportunities while balancing her responsibilities as a parent.
Yorubia's story reflects a reality faced by many families experiencing homelessness: employment alone isn't always enough to overcome the barriers to housing stability. Families need access to affordable housing, supportive services, and opportunities to build lasting financial security.
Today, Yorubia continues taking meaningful steps toward her goals, demonstrating the determination and resilience it takes to build a stronger future for her family.
At Nicholas House, we believe housing is the foundation, but lasting stability is the goal. Through programs like New Horizons, families like Yorubia's have the support and opportunity to build a future filled with greater stability, independence, and hope.
Yorubia’s journey is a reminder that success isn’t always loud—it’s often found in the quiet consistency of showing up, doing the work, and staying the course.
